Obituary for Julius R. Krevans Dr.

Bar Harbor and Mt. Desert
Dr. Julius R. Krevans of Hulls Cove and Somesville passed away peacefully on July 12, 2015. He was beloved by his extended family and the many friends, patients, and colleagues whose lives he enriched. He will be remembered for his warmth, his sage advice, and the joy he brought to everything from solving a tricky medical problem to making popovers at the family cabin.
Julius Richard Krevans was born on May 1, 1924, in New York, New York to Sol and Anuta Krevans and grew up there with his sister Dorothy Krevans (Karp). He received his A.B. degree from New York University and his M.D. degree from NYU School of Medicine in 1946 at the age of 22. He served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps in the Philippine Islands and at Walter Reed Hospital. He had a distinguished career in academic medicine, first as a professor at Johns Hopkins and then as Dean of the medical school at University of California San Francisco. In 1982 Dr. Krevans was appointed the fifth Chancellor of UCSF. Under his leadership the University rose in national and international stature, attracting world class researchers, clinicians and educators. Dr. Krevans retired from the Chancellorship in 1993, and San Francisco Mayor Jordan designated May 19, 1993 as Julius R. Krevans Day. Dr. Krevans remained on the faculty at UCSF until 2002. Dr. Krevans began coming to Mt. Desert in 1962 and taught for many years in the summer genetics course at the Jackson Laboratory. The family fell in love with the island; he and his wife, Patricia, with their five children, built a cabin in Somesville in 1971. Dr. and Mrs. Krevans moved year-round to Hulls Cove when he retired from UCSF in 2002.
Dr. Krevans has served on numerous boards and committees, including the boards of the National Academy of Science Institute of Medicine, the Jackson Laboratory, and MDI Hospital. His many awards and honors include the Abraham Flexner Award (1984) and the UCSF Medal (1993). He was named a Commander of the Order of Merit in the Republic of Italy in 1985 and was a Master in the American College of Physicians. But Dr. Krevans always felt his greatest achievement was the ability to practice clinical medicine. He loved being a physician, and used part of a sabbatical from UCSF to join clinicians at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor.
Julie spent the last several years of his life surrounded by family and friends, enjoying the beauty of Acadia National Park, baking bread, collecting wine, sailing, hiking with Footloose Friends, and taking classes at Acadia Senior College.
In addition to Patricia Krevans, his wife of 65 years, he is survived by daughter Nita (Minneapolis), son JR and daughter-in-law Mary (Bar Harbor), daughter Rachel (Inverness CA and Somesville), daughter Sarah and son-in-law Will Brieger (Sacramento CA and Somesville), daughter Nora (Portland) and seven grandchildren.
Donations in Dr Krevans’ honor can be made to Post Graduate Studies, The Jackson Laboratory, P.O. Box 254, Bar Harbor, Maine 04609-0254, www.genetichealth.jax.org or Acadia Senior College, PO Box 175, Hulls Cove, ME 04644, www.acadiaseniorcollege.org .
