Condolence: sad to hear passing of Dr. Krevans. Fortunate enough to meet him early 2004 at wedding of Laleh Haghshenass. Mentioned always as positive, smart, loving, and dedicated physician, teacher, and friend. He will be missed.

Condolence: I just learned of Dr. Krevans' passing. I was fortunate that he was the Dean of the Medical School when I started UCSF in 1977. He definitely championed more women in medicine. I was invited to his (your) home after he became Chancellor in 1982 and was surprised that he wanted me to sit next to him at dinner. He really wanted to know "what is going on in that dermatology department?" which was admittedly in great chaos at the time. He was a wonderful man and cared deeply about students and house officers, faculty and patients. I trained with JR at Mt Zion so perhaps got more of a glimpse of the personal side of this wonderful man than I might have otherwise. Obviously his contributions to UCSF and medicine in general are monumental. My sympathies are with his entire family and a special hug to my former colleague in Internal Medicine at Mt Zion, JR.

Condolence: When my husband Dr. Stephen McPhee and I arrived at UCSF in July 1980, we were cordially welcomed by Dean Krevans who enthusiastically embraced Steve, a Johns Hopkins student, resident, and fellow (complete with Equanimitas tie) who was joining the Medicine faculty. As a hospital administrator, I deeply admired Dr. Krevans' ability to encourage the School and the hospital and later the campus to work so closely and fruitfully together. It set a practice of collaboration that continues to this day. I remember his decision to give up his pipe when he and the other campus leadership (including other smokers) decided that this medical sciences university needed to go smoke free--for the good of the many and his own very useful life. I will miss the twinkle in his eye. My deepest sympathies to Patsy and the family.

Condolence: In the seventies, Dr. Krevans was the beacon for one of the most controversial and exciting programs funded by the federal government. He was a leader and sponsor of programs to increase the numbers of minority students in the health professional schools, especially the School of Medicine. Dr. Krevans established a program of recruitment, student support, financial aid and social services (housing, school for children of incoming students) so that students could focus on their studies. Under his watch, the largest group of minority health professionals in medicine, dentistry, medical ethics and pharmacy were graduated in 1973. He attended the ceremony we sponsored for the parents of the sixteen students. Although admissions/graduations of minority students are commonplace now, the groundwork was done by educators like Dr. Krevans.
I will never forget his commitment to us nor will many who read his obituary and may not write. He must surely rest in the affection and remembrances we have of him.
