Noted young adult author, Louis A. Meyer, Jr. of Bar Harbor and Corea, ME died July 29, 2014, at Maine Coast Memorial Hospital in Ellsworth, ME of complications from refractory Hodgkin’s Lymphoma .
Writer of the beloved young adult BLOODY JACK series, his twelfth and last book in the series, WILD ROVER NO MORE, will be published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt this September. Meyer graduated with a BA from the University of Florida in 1964, served as a LT.JG in the U.S. Navy for three years, studied art at Columbia University, and then earned a MFA from Boston University in 1973. After teaching art at Rockland High School in Massachusetts, he and his wife Annetje established Sweetback Graphics in Ft. Myers Beach, FL. In 1984, Sweetback began retailing his art and their imprinted designs in Bar Harbor, ME as Blue Loon/ Clair de Loon, which closed due to his illness in Nov., 2013.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Annetje Lawrence Meyer, his sons Matthew and his wife Helen, and Nathaniel Meyer of Portland. Also surviving him are his sister Christine M. Patton and her spouse Tucker of Ft. Myers Beach Fl, his niece Casey Lyon, nephew Darby Patton, along with numerous Lawrence Family members including Mary L. and Joseph Pankowski, Betsey L. and Sung Kim, Eileen L. McDaniel, and Gabrielle L. Ahnberg , all of Tallahassee, FL; David Lawrence, Jr. and Roberta of Coral Gables, FL., Joseph W. Lawrence, II of Ft. Lauderdale, and Antonia L. Johnson of Boulder, CO as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
At his request, there will be no services. Those who wish to remember him in a special way are urged to donate in his name to the Maine Coast Hospital, Mary Dow Cancer Center, 50 Union St. Ellsworth, ME 04605 .
