The Memorial Candle Program has been designed to help offset the costs associated with the hosting this Tribute Website in perpetuity. Through the lighting of a memorial candle, your thoughtful gesture will be recorded in the Book of Memories and the proceeds will go directly towards helping ensure that the family and friends of John Hunneman can continue to memorialize, re-visit, interact with each other and enhance this tribute for future generations.

Condolence: As I recall, Dick was the navigator of the first or second yacht on which I raced from Newport to Bermuda. He did a fine job in nailing the island, and we all appreciated his skill.

He felt that his job was to report to the skipper, though, not to the crew, and so in those distant pre-satellite, pre-GPS days, after he had taken his sun or moon or star sights and reduced them by hand to a position fix, he would squirrel the results away and go report to the skipper, never telling us, the crew, what he had determined. Our game was to try to break down his secretiveness and tell us where we were. As I recall, we never succeeded.

The skipper usually told us Dick's position fix right away, so there was little to be gained or lost in the game, but it amused us to try to get Dick to deviate from his reserved procedure. His work was always excellent, and winning or losing was usually the result of the crew's ability to generate speed, not to the procedures of the navigator.

He showed me what the work of a navigator was like, and within a year or two, I re-taught myself, with some coaching by Dick, what I had learned as a midshipman, and became a navigator myself.

Condolence: I knew Dick through his retirement hobby of collecting artifacts and history of his ancestor Boston fire engine builder Wlliam C. Hunneman. He was a very kindly person who was generous to me in sharing his knowledge of his family history. We first met when he bought his first Hunneman hand fire engine and I helped him loading it up for for the trip to Maine. We have been corresponding about Hunneman fire engines ever since. I'll sorely miss him.
