The lighting of a Memorial Candle not only provides a gesture of sympathy and support to the immediate family during their time of need but also provides the gift of extending the Book of Memories for future generations.

Eric Johnson

I first met John during my internship at The Jackson Laboratory in 1978. He had started there a few months earlier, having moved from his previous job bagging groceries at the local supermarket. He had already established himself as a knowledgeable programmer and I recall a steady stream of scientists beating a path to his desk. He was uncompromising in his desire to understand how things worked and in the elegant design and construction of new things. His idea of a shortcut was to live an ascetic lifestyle in order to be able to focus on perfecting his programs and his soccer. He worked, not to accrue glory, but, out of an intense desire to help others, to contribute to his team and his community. He worked hard, but, also with great humor, and was not above a clever practical joke from time to time. I was not surprised to learn that he had left industry to teach high school and I have no doubt that he inspired many in that role. His selfless commitment to service coupled with his quick and disciplined mind was a bright beacon that offered hope in an often confusing and troubled world. My condolences go out to his family and to his many friends and admirers. John was special and I will miss him.
