Obituary for Harland Wallace Carr
Northeast Harbor
Harland W. Carr, 94, of Northeast Harbor died October 1, 2013 in Bangor. He was born November 12, 1918 in Northeast Harbor up over the drug store. He was the third of eight children of William and Lurline (Stanley) Carr.
He grew up in Manset and Northeast Harbor and graduated from Gilman High School. During the war he worked at the Colt factory in Hartford, CT. Returning to Northeast, he met the new Home Ec teacher, Fabyan Webber and they married and had four children of whom they were extremely proud. Harley worked as a master electrician for his uncle, W. A. Stanley until his retirement. As a young man, Harley was a chauffeur to the summer people and later in life was a chauffeur to anyone who needed him. He was proud of being a member and past president of the Northeast Harbor Lodge #208 A.F&A.M. and was a lifelong fan of the New York Yankees. Harley loved to tinker, inventing ways to make life chores easier for him and Faye. He also tried his hand at oil painting, model boat building, furniture making, and taught himself to play the saxophone. A gift of a $20 rock tumbler from Faye sparked a 40 year love of gemstones. He was a self-taught faceter and made many beautiful stones from tourmaline, sapphire, garnet, and everything except diamonds which he loved to give to family and as thank you gifts. He was proud that he built the house he lived in for 60 years and most of the furniture in it. Through the dedication of Dennis and Anna, Pat Jordan, and the Burr family, he was able to live in his home well into his 90’s.
Harley is survived by daughter-in-law, Anna Carr; sons, Larry Carr and wife Betty, Ron Carr and wife Alma; daughter, Susan Bulay and husband Bob; grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife, Faye; and son, Dennis.
Calling hours will be held 1:00-2:00, Monday, October 7, 2013 at Jordan-Fernald, 1139 Main St. Mount Desert with a Masonic Service at 2:00 followed by a funeral service. Interment will be at Forest Hill Cemetery, Northeast Harbor.
