Obituary for Charles E. Carter

HOBE SOUND, FLORIDA and MOUNT DESERT, MAINE
Charlie Carter, 68, died May 30, 2014 after a hard fought battle with cancer. He was born June 30, 1945 in Bar Harbor, Maine the son of Donald M. and Glenice Mitchell Carter.
Charlie graduated from Mount Desert High School class of 1964. Following graduation he attended the University of Maine at Orono and later left the State of Maine for the allure of broader horizons in California. Charlie took a job that ultimately transferred him to the Atlanta, Georgia area which he made his home for over forty years. Charlie retired in 2012 as an Executive with ISMG Security a job that he enjoyed as much for the people with whom he worked as the work itself. He never gave up his love for Maine and he and his wife, Sue, built their dream home on Long Pond with the goal of sharing their retirement days between Maine and Florida.
Charlie was the quintessential, self-taught handy man. Without a doubt he kept his own house as well as those of his children in tip top shape. He was never able to sit still so you never knew what project you might find him doing. He might be tightening a loose doorknob, hanging shelves, mowing the lawn, or any other task he could do to keep busy. He also did more than his fair share of moving furniture for any friend or family member who may have needed help. He was the king of careful packing.
Charlie is survived by his loving wife and soul mate, Sue. His daughter, Christina and her husband Chris of Palm Harbor, Florida, son Scott and his wife Kathy of Birmingham, Alabama, daughter Gretchen of Dunedin, Florida, Shannon and her husband Matt of Cumming, Georgia. He is also survived by seven very special grandchildren Natalie, Brianna, Mitchell, Maggie, Jackson, Brock, and Kate. His favorite brother John Carter of Mount Desert, and Mary and Mike Stevens who are Charlie and Sue’s travel mates and best buddies. He also leaves behind many loving family members and friends too numerous to mention. Heaven received an angel way too soon.
In Lieu of Flowers, contributions in Charlie's memory may be made to the research fund at Emory University Hospital: Office of Gift Records, Emory University, 1762 Clifton Rd. NE, Suite 1400, Atlanta, GA 30322, Attn: Vicky Riedel. Make checks out to Emory University and on the "for" line write, Winship Surgical Oncology Research Fund/Charles Carter
