Obituary for Alice Ann Madix

Brooklin/Brooksville
Alice Ann Madix, 71 died unexpectedly of natural causes on September 6th, 2015 at the Keeper’s house on Green Island in Blue Hill Bay. She was born in 1944 in Tampa, Florida, the daughter of James H. and Beatrice Smith Benjamin.
Alice Ann graduated Chamberlain High School in Tampa, Florida and attended the University of South Florida. She married her high school sweetheart and love of her life, James Madix in 1965. They had an adventurous and incredible life together and had just celebrated 50 years of marriage. She loved him and she loved the sea; the two were her religion.
After raising two children in South Carolina and years of vacationing in Maine, her love for the coast of Maine brought them as permanent residents in 1988.
Alice Ann was a remarkably kind and loving person. She was known to be very generous, not only to her family but others throughout every community in which she lived. She was a lifetime volunteer. Whether she was serving the American Cancer Society, food banks, as a Big Sister mentor, an adult literacy educator or deep woods fire watch, she had a heart of gold whose practical and no nonsense style served her well.
She was an environmentalist, a conservationist and was always willing to lend a hand, especially to important causes or those in need or less fortunate. She was a firm believer in education and equal rights for all. She was a voracious reader and excellent writer, a lover of hot tea, poetry, music and the arts of every kind as well as all things wild and natural. She was also an avid gardener of flowers and shrubs.
She was a very smart and savvy businesswoman, a fantastic cook and homemaker and an exceptional wife, mother and grandmother. She was the glue and life-raft for her family. She is greatly and will be forever missed by them all. It is a permanent and irreplaceable loss. She loved this earth and hated to leave it.
Alice Ann is survived by her husband, James C. Madix of Brooklin; son James Curtis Madix, Jr. of San Antonio, Texas; daughter Melone Madix-Jackson and husband William Bo Jackson of Brooksville; Granddaughter Grace Melone Jackson of Brooksville; a brother James H. Benjamin of Florida; three special nieces Sarah Kate, Emily and Liliane; as well as many wonderful and lifelong friends.
The family had a private gathering at her home in Brooklin. A celebration of her life will be held at a future time. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in her honor and memory to any library, food pantry, music program or educational organization of your choice.
