Obituary for James Ivan Scroggy

James Ivan  Scroggy
Blue Hill -- James Ivan Scroggy, 81, passed away at his home in Blue Hill on September 8, 2016, after a brave 3 year battle with lung cancer. His wife and daughter were at his side.

Jim was born in Waterloo, Iowa, on January 13, 1935, the son of the late Ralph and Rita (Murphy) Scroggy. Predeceasing him were two sisters, Mary Altenburg, and Martha Karas, and one brother, John Franklin. He graduated from West High School in Waterloo and served in the U.S. Air Force for four years, the final year at Dow Air Force in Bangor where he met his future wife of 57 years, Ardene Rae Delano.

He received his BA in English at the Univ. of Maine, and after teaching English for several years he returned to college at the University of New York in Albany and received an MS in education with certification in counseling. Until he retired, he worked as a psychotherapist in private practice with a psychiatrist in Glens Falls, NY.

He loved nature and was an advocate for animals, wild and tame. He loved to read, write prose and poetry as well as Letters to the Editors regarding politics, which he followed daily. Towards the end of his life, he spent hours at his computer and television. His favorite football team was the Minnesota Vikings.

He is survived by two children: John Delano Scroggy of Lake George, NY, and Rebecca Dene Scroggy Gould. Rebecca and her husband, William Edgar Gould, reside in Ellicott City, MD. He has five grandchildren: Brittany Scroggy Townsend, Ashley Scroggy Bellevue, Courtney Rae Scroggy, Nicholas (Nico) James Scroggy, and Cody James Gould. Lillian Nico Townsend is his 13 month old great-granddaughter. Jim was predeceased by Nicholas.

The family gathered to celebrate his life on Sept. 11, at the family cottage on Cape Rosier, Maine.
