Obituary for William Joseph Ryan
Mariaville
William J. Ryan, 85, died at home on May 14, 2014. He was born December 3, 1928 in Concord, Mass, the son of William George Ryan and Mary Fewry Ryan.
He graduated from Concord High School and attended Mass Radio School in Boston. While in high school he played on the 1946 championship football team. He served with the US Army in Korea from 1951 to 1953 with the 226th Signal Service Company. He was attached to the IX Corps and later to Eight Army Headquarters. He received the Korean Campaign Ribbon with four campaign stars, the United Nations medal, Defense medal, Meritorious Unit Citation, and the Korean Presidential Unit Citation. After his military service he was employed by the Concord Municipal Light Plant and retired as line foreman in 1979. He was also a member of the Concord Fire Department call force for 20 years. He married Harriet Huyler on June 7, 1967 and moved to Mariaville, Maine in July of 1979. Bill was a life member of Post 207 American Legion in Trenton and of Post 109 of the VFW in Ellsworth. He also served on the planning board in Mariaville for several years. Bill loved hunting and fishing in Maine and shot at many different shooting events in Massachusetts and Maine.
Bill is survived by his wife of 47 years, Harriet Ryan, his brother, Richard Ryan, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister, Mary Charbonneau.
A funeral service will be held 10:00 am, Monday, May 19, 2014 at Jordan-Fernald, 113 Franklin St. Ellsworth with Father Scott Mower officiating. Interment will be at St. Bernard Roman Catholic Cemetery, Concord, Mass.
Donations in Bill’s memory may be made to St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 231 Main Street, Ellsworth or Post 109 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars at 419 Main Street, Ellsworth, 04605.
