Obituary for Veda Morin Ames

Veda Morin Ames, 91, died May 6, 2015 at an Ellsworth hospital. She was born in Parkman, Maine on January 1, 1924 to Peter and Mattie (Parent) Morin and was raised by her grandmother, Mrs. Peter Morin, Sr. in Guilford, Maine. Married to Robert Barbour Ames at the Holy Family Catholic Church on (August 8/28/46) in Sangerville, Maine, Veda is survived by six children, Robert John Ames of Nashville, TN, Anne Ames Kennon of Dallas, TX, Mary Ames McArdle of Dallas, TX, John Everett Ames of Hernando Beach, FL, Jane Ames Heyward of Raleigh, NC, and Roberta Ames Kahny of Plano, TX and was the proud grandmother of nine and great-grandmother of seven.
Veda received a “PHT” (Putting Husband Through) degree from the University of Maine at Orono. Veda and Bob were members of the first group of married couples on campus after World War II. Veda dedicated her life to supporting her husband and children through myriad educational degrees and professional endeavors. While earning her teaching degree, she taught at John Bapst High School, Bangor, Maine. Upon completion of her degree, she continued her teaching career at Patten Academy in Patten, Maine and Lenox High School in Lenox, Massachusetts.
Throughout her life, she pursued interests in gardening, education and fine needlework. She was a Garden Club member in Rome, GA and Owensboro, KY, a Needlepoint Guild participant in Milwaukee, WI and Ellsworth, ME, and a Women’s Club member in Devon, PA and Lamoine, ME. As a lifelong supporter of the Scouting Program, Veda was a Girl Scout Leader and Den Mother and more recently, a constant supporter and contributor to the Maine Katahdin Area Boy Scout Council (Robert B. Ames Campurship Memorial Fund). After spending many summers in Lamoine, Maine and following the death of her husband, Veda retired there in 1983. She became an advocate of the Lamoine Educational System with special emphasis on library improvements at the school. As an active and proud member of the community, her interests focused on educational improvements.
She is predeceased by her husband, Robert Barbour Ames (deceased in 1983) and is survived by her sister Helen Morin Calos and her brother Roger F. Morin as well as many cherished nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
Friends and family may call 5:00-7:00 PM, Monday, May 11, 2015 at Jordan-Fernald, 113 Franklin St. Ellsworth. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 AM, Tuesday, May 12 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 231 Main Street, Ellsworth, where Veda was a member, with Father Emilie Dube, Celebrant. Interment will be at Forest Hill Cemetery, Lamoine.
