Obituary for Ruth Elizabeth Ames

Swans Island
Ruth Elizabeth “Betty” Ames, 89, died November 24, 2013 with her family around her at a Bangor hospital. She was born in Rockland, December 14, 1923 a daughter of Ernest Albert and Aletha Pearl (Hyler) Munro.
Betty grew up in Rockland, graduating from Rockland High School in 1942. She and her family moved to Bangor in 1959 with many happy and active years there before retiring to Swans Island more than 30 years ago. While in Bangor she was an involved member of All Souls Congregational Church as well as many other community activities. Upon moving to Swans Island she continued her involvement with the community churches, participating in the Ladies Aid and always willing to volunteer for any community event. She was the quintessential homemaker whose life was centered around her family and home. Betty was an accomplished seamstress, knitter, baker, especially known for her “apple pies”. She was an avid sports fan who supported local and University of Maine teams as well as the Red Sox, Celtics, and Patriots.
She is survived by her husband of 68 years, Bradford of Swans Island; sons, B. Daniel Ames and partner Marie of Bangor, Scott Ames of Rochester Hills, Michigan; daughters, Susan Speirs and husband Rob, Katherine Domingo and husband Roger all of Cumberland, Pamela Ames of Hermon; sister, Patricia Clements of Uncasville, Connecticut; ten grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
A private service will be held at the convenience of the family.
