Obituary for Philip H. Rackliffe

Blue Hill
Philip Harry Rackliffe, 93, died April 8, 2013 in Blue Hill. He was born in Rockland, March 9, 1920 the son of Charles and Hazel (Melzar) Rackliffe.
Philip moved to Blue Hill when he was 4 years old and was raised in East Blue Hill. At age 13, he moved to Newton, MA and graduated from Newton High School in 1938. He entered the U.S. Army and served during WWII in the Pacific Theatre. Upon discharge he returned to Blue Hill and married his lifelong partner, Phyllis, September 9, 1945. In 1946 they both started working at Rowantrees Pottery. 1968 they opened Rackliffe Pottery where the family worked together. Philip was still very active in the business and was making mugs just last week. He was active in the Blue Hill Rifle and Pistol Club, was a town constable, and past president of the Blue Hill Fair. Philip served as Master of Ira Berry #187 and as DDGM of the 4th Masonic District. He was a member of the Scottish Rites and York Rite Bodies, member of the Irene Chapter Eastern Star, Ellsworth, and member of the American Legion.
He is survived by sons, David Rackliffe and wife Joan, and Dennis Rackliffe and wife Margaret all of Blue Hill; daughter, Sheryl Whitmore and husband Jonathan of Auburn; nine grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and many special nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his dear wife, Phyllis in 2010; siblings, Paul, Charles, Russell and Ruth.
A memorial service will be held 1:00pm, Friday, April 12, 2013 at Jordan-Fernald, 141 South St. Blue Hill with Rev. Rob McCall officiating.
