Obituary for Perry L. Long

Surry
Perry Long of Surry died September 22, 2015 in the loving presence of his family.
“He fought the fight, but lost the battle”. He battled with cancer for 10 years and at that time was given a short time to survive….leave it to Perry. He never gave up hope, prayed for a cure, and wanted everyone one to think positively right to the very end. He took his life into his own hands and found every possible resource for a quality life.
Perry was born October 23, 1950 in Maryville, TN. to parents, Harold C. Long and Sylvia A. Long. His Dad had a love for the water as Perry did. He is survived by his mother, Sylvia “Peggy” Long, of Augusta and her partner Harold Jones. His mom was very special to him and they were always there for each other.
He leaves behind a family that trusted his advice, valued his unconditional love and knew he would be there for them through anything. He loved his siblings, sister “sissy” Vera and her husband Warren Dowling; his brothers Eric Long and Anthony Long; nephews, Harold Dunning, Jim Hillock, Lloyd Rhodes and Brandon Long, niece Brooke Long and many great nieces and nephews.
Surviving is his wife/partner and best friend, Beverly Long of Surry, who loved him to the moon and back. His charm, his smile, his wonderful sense of humor and his love were so ever present in our lives. God gives us many gifts in our lives, how lucky we were to have been blessed with each other.
His step-children Alison Cote and her husband Scott of Otis, and Cristin Anderson of Ellsworth always was a bonus to him. He also leaves his grandchildren who were so very special to him, Seth, Hunter and Shelby Cote, Silas Davies and Ashton Gardner. The first time he was called their grandfather, felt very special to him. Great family times will be memories that they will cherish forever.
He leaves the light of his world, his daughter, Kathryn Long of Bar Harbor and her partner Matt McDonald. The day his daughter was born, was the most happy day of his life…Words cannot express his love for his daughter. His joy, his comfort, his pride came from his relationship with his daughter. They enjoyed lobster fishing together when she was young, followed by working together at the lobster shack later on. He always was there for advice and constantly teaching important life lessons and instilled values that mean so much to her...which included their love of raw scallops and other “weird” foods everyone else would cringe at! He was more than a father, but also her best friend, and will FOREVER be an inspiration, and will be watching down on her with pride throughout her life.
True friendships are few and far between but several lasting friendships that he had were very special. To the many friends that he met throughout the years at The Lobster Shack, you will be forever in his heart. A special thank you to Dr. Robert Newman, a special friend and neighbor who offered nutritional, herbal and emotional support throughout his cancer diagnosis. He was predeceased by his father, Harold Long and his nephew Cory Long.
Perry grew up and attended schools in Bar Harbor and graduated from Bar Harbor High School. He had various jobs throughout his life but his pride and joy was Perry’s Lobster Shack on Newbury Neck, Surry. The shack brought him numerous lasting friendships, fun friend and family times, and great pride for his accomplishments and the success that his dream brought to him.
If you drive by the Lobster Shack you can currently see newly strung lights which were something he always wanted to do. Wallace Events and his grandson Seth, made a dream come true! Perry's character is recognized by the many comments made after his passing made on social media. Gracious, great hugger, great smile, sincere, gem of a man, honest and genuine are some of the qualities people remember him by.
A celebration of life will be held on October 3, 2015 from 1-3 pm at his home, 1069 Newbury Neck Road, Surry, ME. A circling of boats to honor his life will immediately follow off the pier. Please feel free to join in this ceremony of celebration for Perry.
