Obituary for Pauline M. Reece
Lamoine
Pauline M. Reece, 92, died after a brief illness on Monday, December 7, 2015, at Maine Coast Memorial Hospital in Ellsworth. She was born on July 4, 1923 in Llandudno, North Wales, UK, the first child of Paul and Amy (Wainwright) Askew.
In 1942 she married David W. Reece, during their years of separation during WWII; Pauline worked for the BBC in London and in North Wales. After the birth of their first child Anne in 1946 in North London, the family moved to Aberdeen, Scotland, the birthplace of Margaret (1949) and Jennifer (1952). In Scotland, Pauline worked as a marriage guidance counselor while her husband taught Classics at the University. In 1967 the family emigrated to the United States on the invitation of Union College in Schenectady NY. Here, Pauline and her family became lifelong friends of the Neal Allen family and she served in many academic and community organizations. After the early death of her husband in 1981, she went on to earn her BA from the College of St. Rose in Albany and her citizenship in the United States. She retired to Lamoine, Maine in 1988. She married Roger Sampson of Hancock Point in 1992 in St. Saviour's Episcopal Church, Bar Harbor, which became her spiritual home, especially after his untimely death.
Pauline is survived by her beloved daughters Anne Reece of Somerville MA,, Margaret Reece Allen and husband Richard G. Allen of Sebago, and Jennifer Reece of Lamoine, by her grandsons David Allen of Sebago, and Nicholas Allen, his wife Stacie, and their children Wyatt, Evan, and Cleo of Newbury, MA, and by many family members in the U.K.. Pauline had a wide circle of friends, all of whom could rely on her for a listening and compassionate ear and wise counsel. Among her passions were poetry, music, spirited political debate, and coastal Maine. She will be greatly missed by all but most of all by her daughters to whom she was not only a loving mother, but a true friend.
A celebration of life will be held 3pm, Saturday, December 12, 2015 at St. Saviour’s Episcopal Church, 41 Mt. Desert Street, Bar Harbor with Celebrant Rev. Timothy Fleck.
In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made in memory of her to St. Saviour's Episcopal Church, Bar Harbor, or to her favorite charity, Medecins Sans Frontieres (Doctors without Borders), 333 7th Avenue, New York, NY 10001-5004.
