Obituary for Olive E. Conley

Ellsworth
Olive Elizabeth Conley, 97, died March 3, 2014, at an Ellsworth hospital. She was born in Ellsworth on May 12, 1916, youngest daughter of Minnie B. (Whitney) and the Rev. Henry Washburn Conley.
After graduating from the University of Maine in Orono, she taught English at high schools in Frankfort, North Haven, Lincoln, Old Town, and Ellsworth. She also earned a post graduate degree from Univ. of Maine and a degree in library science from University of Chicago, and her final years in education were spent as librarian at Ellsworth High School. Her career in education spanned 46 years, and she has kept in touch with her many fellow teachers and her students. She enjoyed traveling with her sister Katharine and other relatives; and they toured Germany, France, England, Scotland, Czechoslovakia, Japan, and much of the United States. Olive loved children, and they have happy memories of times with her and a high point of their vacations in Maine. Olive enjoyed showing her home to children, and because many of them loved to race from one end to another, they called her house a "running house." Except for years when her teaching positions were too far away, Olive lived in the Conley family home from the time she was a young child. Olive played a very active part in her church, Union Congregational United Church of Christ in Ellsworth Falls and was the organist there for a number of years. She had memberships in AAUW, Mayflower Society, Society of Descendents of the Colonial Clergy, American Red Cross, Hancock County Retired Teachers Association, Delta Kappa Gamma Society, and the Maine Education Association and Ellsworth Historical Society.
Olive is survived by her brother, George H. Conley of Ellsworth; nieces and nephews, Margaret Conley of Seattle, WA, Philip Conley and wife, Regina of Augusta, Elizabeth Ramirez and husband Marius of Ellsworth, Ardene Scroggy and husband James of Blue Hill, Dale Delano and wife Martha of Charlton, NY, Carolyn Manlowe and husband James of Yucaipa, CA and Richard Smart of Colorado. She had many great nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by five older siblings, Burton and Katharine Conley, Lillian Delano, Harriet Gray and Priscilla Smart; a nephew, Ted Conley.
A memorial service will be held in the summer. Interment will be at Woodbine Cemetery, Ellsworth
