Obituary for Nancy S. Borst

Sullivan
Nancy Elaine Salisbury Borst, 72, died November 25th , 2015 peacefully in the company of her family at EMMC in Bangor. She was born Oct. 16, 1943 in Bar Harbor the daughter of Allen and Florence (Davis) Salisbury.
Nancy’s very young life was spent growing up in Bar Harbor on the grounds of the Jackson Laboratory in its early days, as her father Allen was the caretaker of the lab and assistant to its founder Dr. Little. After the Great Fire in Bar Harbor, Nancy’s family moved to Franklin to recover, and shortly thereafter her parents purchased a small parcel of land on Tunk Lake for their family camp. Upon return to MDI, Nancy settled with her parents into a house in Hulls Cove. Nancy attended Bar Harbor High School, where she was a typical teenager, did well in her studies, enjoyed the fashions of the day and her beloved Elvis Presley records. It was here that she met Charles Beam, her first husband. After the birth of their son James, Nancy and Charles with young Jimmy lived all around the United States as Charles served in the Air Guard. From Maine to Texas to Washington State to Connecticut, the young family saw the country and Nancy continued her studies. After finally settling in Connecticut, Nancy and Charles amicably parted ways and Nancy started working in the publishing industry. Here in Brookfield, CT Nancy met her second husband, Merle Borst, they married and joined their families together. Nancy worked for over 30 years for what was the Scholastic book company, later Grolier and then Hashett publishing. She helped maintain the company’s accounts and was savvy with computers and technology long before the modern technology revolution. Nancy was well known as a wonderful cook and entertainer, holding large holiday gatherings for family and friends in her New Milford, Connecticut home. In her retirement, Nancy moved back to Maine and settled in Sullivan. Never comfortable sitting idle, Nancy took up a new job with her cousin Arthur MacPike working in the beautiful summer homes of Bar Harbor. Nancy took time off to visit with her grandchildren in Virginia, and enjoyed spending time with cousin Linda Bennett and entertaining many visitors to camp at Tunk Lake. She loved to spend time out on the lake with the kids, rowing, fishing, hiking, swimming, enjoying a campfire and being in the beautiful Maine outdoors. Her children and grandchildren have many fond memories of Grandma’s love and generosity, her no-nonsense way and the many good times shared.
She is survived by her son James Beam, his wife Sara Chaves Beam, and two grandsons, Kenneth and Carter of Saluda, Virginia. She is also survived by her step-children and grandchildren: Craig and Jennifer Borst and children Brian and Lauren of Mooresville, North Carolina; Janice and Cal Fordham and daughter Celina Spain of Beacon Falls, Connecticut; Gary Borst of Huntington Beach, California; Phyllis Andersen and her son Mason of Bristol, Connecticut; and Keith Borst and children Coleen and Keith Jr of Katy, Texas. Nancy was predeceased by her parents, Allen and Florence (Davis) Salisbury of Hulls Cove, Maine, and her husband Merle Borst of New Milford, Connecticut.
A celebration of Nancy’s life will be announced in the summer of 2016. Expressions of remembrance in honor of Nancy’s life can be made to the Maine Seacoast Mission, 127 West St, Bar Harbor, ME 04609
