Obituary for Matte A. Watt

BANGOR, BAR HARBOR AND MOUNT DESERT
Mette A. Watt, 76,died at MDI Hospital, December 31, 2011. She was born in Port Chester, NY on August 21, 1935, the daughter of Lief and Edith (Christoffersen) Arup.
She graduated from Mamaroneck High School in Mamaroneck, NY in 1953, earned a BFA in industrial design from Rhode Island School of Design in 1957, was a student in classical guitar at the university of Maine from 1995-2000. She was a member of the League of Women Voters in Bangor, president of the Auxillary of Penobscot County Medical Society in 1982-83, member of the Bangor Art Society, secretary of the Down East Guitar Society and a member and instructor for Acadia Senior College. Mette’s artistic career was extensive; she was an illustrator for GMAC in New York, an artist and industrial designer for General Radio Company, an illustrator for the Hanover Advertising Agency in Hanover, NH, a freelance illustrator in Orono and Bangor and a multi-media artist on Mount Desert Island in her own studio: Mette Arup Watt Art & Design. Exhibits of her work ranged from Rhode Island to New York to Maine.
She is survived by her beloved husband of 52 years, Thomas Watt, MD, of Mount Desert, two sons, Charles Thomas Watt and wife, Anne of Atlanta. GA; Sherman Alexander Watt of Bucksport, ME and a daughter, Kathryn Ann Skalak and husband Peter of Redmon, WA and five grandchildren, William, Lisa and Andrew Watt and Julia and Allison Skalak, a niece, Susanne Westley and a nephew, William Kruse. She was predeceased by her sister, Kirsten Kruse.
A service of remembrance will be held at 11:00 am, Friday, January 6, 2012 at Jordan-Fernald Funeral Home, 1139 Main Street, Mount Desert.
