Obituary for Mary Elizabeth Furth
Surry and Lansdowne, PA
Mary Elizabeth Autry Furth, 81, died August 10, 2014 at an Ellsworth healthcare facility. She was born October 8, 1932 in Westerly, RI, the daughter of Curtis and Phyllis (Matthews) Autry.
She graduated from Westerly High School 1949 in Rhode Island, then moved to New York City to attend Bellevue School of Nursing where she obtained an RN in 1952. She received her BS in 1954 at Hunter College. While working as a nurse supervisor at Bellevue Hospital, she met John Furth who was interning in Medicine-Pathology. They married in Bangor, ME in June, 1959 and honeymooned in Surry, ME. Mary worked as a nurse over the years and in the home, raising 3 children. Mary was an active member of the Lansdowne Friends Meeting, serving on the Peace, Diversity, and Social Concerns Committee. She chaired the committee for many years. She devoted much energy to taking care of her husband John, and daughters, Karen, Susan and Robin, and later their spouses and children. She always offered a helping hand to those in need.
She is survived by her husband John J. Furth of Lansdowne, PA and Surry ME; daughters, Karen Furth of Brooklyn, NY, Susan Furth of Lansdowne PA, and Robin Furth of Surry ME; grandchildren, Sara Lunden, Corey Lunden and Alex Nubile; siblings, Dorothy McVeigh, Robert Autry, Susan Buckley, and Donald Autry. She was predeceased by siblings, William Autry and Phyllis Vincent.
A Celebration of her life will be held 1:00 pm, Sunday, August 17, 2014 at the Morgan Bay Zendo, Morgan Bay Road, Surry. A memorial service will take place in the fall at Lansdowne Friends Meeting, Lansdowne, PA .
