Obituary for Mary Catherine "Lennie" Banks

Swans Island
Mary “Lennie” Catherine Banks passed away peacefully on February 20th 2015. Her family is grateful that they were able to be by her side. Mary was born in Okmulgee, Oklahoma June 8th, 1931 the daughter of James and Mary (Green) Lunney. She grew up in Oklahoma as the oldest of ten children. She attended St. Anthony Catholic School and then went on to earn her nursing degree at St. Edward’s Mercy Hospital in Fort Smith, Arkansas in 1952.

Mary began her career as a nurse in Arkansas, where she met and married her husband William H. Banks on December 29, 1953. After moving to Maine, Mary was an Operating Room Nurse first at Eastern Maine General Hospital and then Waldo County General Hospital. After retirement, she embraced her greatest joy as Nana to 13 grandchildren. Known for her generous heart, she never missed an opportunity to load up her blue station wagon in search of a delightful adventure. Mary enjoyed shopping, traveling, swimming and keeping up with the many life events of her children and grandchildren.
She is survived by her children Deborah and husband Rick Collins of Swanville, Rebecca and husband Michael York of Orrington, William and wife Raylene Banks of Swans Island, Constance and husband Jeffery Card of Frankfort, Carrie and husband Kenneth Anderson of New Gloucester, Liela and husband James Johnson of Holden; sisters Liz and husband Burl Calsing of Arkansas, “Babe” and husband Chuck Gautier of Texas, brother Tommy and wife Nancy Lunney of Oklahoma and sister-in- law Jeanette Lunney of Oklahoma; numerous nieces and nephews. Nana will be dearly missed by her grandchildren Mylissa and husband Travis Keene, Jacob and wife Amy Anderson, Catherine Banks and husband Matt Wilson, Lyndsy Collins, Lucas and wife Elisabeth Anderson, Sarah and husband Marc Turgeon, Erin and husband Matthew Mackenzie, Liela Banks, William Johnson, Kimberly Banks, Emily Banks, Jackson York, and great grandson Noah Turgeon. Mary was predeceased by her mother, father, five sisters, one brother and her beloved husband William H. Banks.
Family and friends are invited to visiting hours Sunday, March 1st from 1:00-3:00pm at Jordan-Fernald, 1139 Main Street on Route 198, Mt. Desert. A springtime graveside committal services will be announced and held at Mt. Hope Cemetery, 1048 State Street Bangor, ME.
