Obituary for Marion Louise Dyer

Bar Harbor
Marion Louise Moon Dyer, 80, died November 29, 2015 in Bar Harbor. She was born August 19, 1935 in Ellsworth, the daughter of Lester H. and Hazel (Googins) Moon.
Marion graduated from Bar Harbor High School in 1953 and two years later, on June 12, 1955, she married her high school sweetheart, Donald E. Dyer, Jr., who served in the United States Army. For the next twenty years, Marion, Don and family traveled the country and the world, including overseas assignments in Germany and Okinawa, Japan. After Don’s last assignment at Fort Bragg, N.C., he retired from active duty in 1978, and then he and Marion returned home to Bar Harbor. Marion and Don had two children, Donald and Donna. Donald is a professor of Russian and Linguistics and Chair of the Department of Modern Languages at the University of Mississippi. Donna is a physical therapist who resides in Fayetteville, North Carolina. Marion for over 30 years was a member of the Bar Harbor Congregational Church, UCC, where she also worked for several years as the church secretary. Moreover, she worked as a bookkeeper at various times for Mt. Desert Island Hospital and Ledgelawn Cemetery. For nearly four decades, Marion lovingly and faithfully cared for her husband, Don, who was stricken with multiple sclerosis. She dedicated her life to helping people. Marion was a great cook, like her mother, and a great gardener, like her father. Visitors to the town often stopped to admire and comment on her beautiful yard. She was also a pretty good bowler, a superb scrap booker and a great typist.
Marion is survived by her son, Dr. Donald L. Dyer and wife Helen of Oxford, MS; daughter, Donna D. Staples and husband John of Fayetteville, N.C.; three grandchildren, Erin Dyer, Nick Staples, and Tony Staples and wife Kristyn; great-granddaughter, Amelia Staples; brother-in-law, LeRoy Dyer and wife Joan of Middleton, CT.; sister-in-law, Deborah Dyer of Bar Harbor; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Marion was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, LTC(Ret.) Donald E. Dyer, Jr. ,brother, Robert Moon, and sister, Judy Burns, both of Bar Harbor.
A memorial service will be held at 11am, December 18, 2015 at the Bar Harbor Congregational Church. Those who desire may make gifts in Marion’s memory to the Bar Harbor Congregational Church, UCC, 29 Mt. Desert Street, Bar Harbor, 04609.
