Bar Harbor
Marilyne B. Marino, 90, peacefully passed away on December 20, 2012, at the Birch Bay Village residential facility in Bar Harbor while in the company of family and dear friends.
She was born on December 19, 1922, in Boston, MA, the daughter of Harold E. and Elizabeth G. (Smith) Barnes. During her younger years, she was taught by her father to be an avid hunter and fisherman and accompanied him on many hunting and fishing trips. She attended K-12 school in Bar Harbor and attended Worcester Normal School and graduated with a Degree in Business Administration. Shortly after graduation, she met her husband Hank while out for a night on the town in Boston with her girlfriends. Marilyne and Hank married on September, 26, 1944, and began a family in Bar Harbor with the birth of their first child, Marilyne in October 1946. Two daughters followed, Joyce in 1951 and Ellen in 1955. While not attending to her husband and daughters, and grandchildren later on, she worked at the MDI Hospital. Following years of service at the hospital and wanting to spend more time with her husband, she moved on and went to work for Hank as a book keeper at the H&H Red & White until their retirement in 1984.
Marilyne loved to travel, especially to Hawaii where she and Hank would escape from the mid‑winter doldrums of Bar Harbor to revive and relax on the beaches of Waikiki. Locally, Marilyne took great pleasure with her drives around the Ocean Drive and up Cadillac Mountain in her beloved Acadia National Park. Socializing with friends at the West End Drug store was a daily ritual along with spending time with her many canine pets. She was an exceptional knitter and cook, and willingly passed her skills on through the years to family and friends wanting to learn. Thanks to her immaculate recipe rolodex, many top secret mixes still reside in the family. When she took time off from cooking, knitting and cross word puzzles, she was visiting and passing on her life’s wisdom to her children and grandchildren. Marilyne was a one of a kind grandmother, mother, sister, aunt and friend, and lovingly touched the lives of all who knew her.
Marilyne is survived by two daughters; Joyce M. Fortier-King of Ellsworth and Ellen H. Marino of Orwigsburg, PA., son-in-law, Kendall “Duffy” Akerley, step‑brother; Jay Barnes of Marlboro, sister-in-law, Dolores Barnes of Lady Lake, FL., four grandchildren; William Nickels, Jr. and wife Julaine of Corvallis, OR., Keith Nickels and wife, Christa of Wesley Chapel, FL., Jessica Sprague of Bar Harbor and G. Joseph Fortier II of Ellsworth. Two great-grandchildren; Natalia Nickels and Anthony Nickels, four nieces and two nephews. Marilyne was predeceased by her husband, Herman “Hank” Marino, brother, Keith B. Barnes and daughter, Marilyne E. Akerley.
Funeral services will be held on December 31, 2012, at the Bar Harbor Congregational Church where she and Hank were life-long members. Viewing is at 1 p.m. and the service is at 2 p.m. Rev. Dr. Sandra Reed and the Rev. Margaret “Pat” Stiles are officiating. Spring interment will be at the Ledgelawn Cemetery in Bar Harbor.
