Obituary for Lyman Spire King

Lyman Spire King
Ellons, France -- Lyman Spire King, of Ellons, France, passed away on April 23, 2017 at 87 years old after succumbing to complications of Alzheimer’s disease.

Born in Syracuse, N.Y. on February 26, 1930, he and his family moved to Geneva where he lived as a young boy and graduated from Geneva High school in 1947. He attended the First Presbyterian Church, sang in the choir as a boy and achieved his Eagle as a boy scout in BSA troop 4. Some of his happiest memories were of summers as a scout and later working as a staff member on the waterfront at Babcock Hovey where he taught canoeing and swimming. He spent many hours working on boat motors with his boyhood friend, Paul Daykin, and eventually obtained his HAM license which he put to use even in his later years as a volunteer emergency radio operator.

Lyman was awarded a coveted NROTC scholarship and attended the University of Rochester then transferred and completed his degree in Electrical Engineering at Northwestern University. He belonged to the Theta Chi fraternity and competed as a member of the sailing club in many chilly competitions on Lake Michigan.

Upon graduation, he was commissioned as an Ensign in the US Navy. He served three years in active duty in the South Pacific Theater aboard the USS Pickaway, a troop transport ship which returned the first marine division to be released from the Korean war in 1955.

Upon completion of his service career, he married Janice Daykin of Geneva and moved to Painted Post and later Bradford, P.A. where he worked for Corning Glass. Transferred to operations in Europe, he spent most of his career specializing in Laboratory Glassware working at various Corning subsidiaries throughout northern England and France. After a brief endeavor at dairy farming in Jordan, N.Y., he returned to Europe, continued his career as a business manager and later retired. His last years were spent in Normandy, France, where he did some farming, bred and raised Connemara ponies and lived in and restored a number of historic Norman Houses near Bayeux, France.

Predeceased by his parents, Lewis W. and Hilda S. King, sister Dr. Murial Schauble, and nephew James Schauble, he is remembered by his loving companion, Ursula Melcher, and his family: Former wife, Janice (Daykin) St Louis, sons: Jay, Greg (Saundra) and Matthew (Michelle) King, and daughter Pamela (James) Steinkirchner. His grandchildren: Chris and Alicia Steinkirchner, Kathy S. (Joseph) Bykowicz, Ryan (Katie) King and Justin (Kaylin) King, Chelsea, Kiersten, Sydney and Madelyn King, and great granddaughter, Aubrey Bykowicz as well as nieces: Cheryl Winter, Suzanne Silvir and Deborah Sand.

Lyman’s remains will be laid to rest in the Melcher family plot at Forest Hill Cemetery, Mount Desert, Maine.
