Obituary for Lydia C. Smith
Sullivan/Hancock
Lydia C. Smith, 89, of Sullivan, passed away on October 24, 2011 at Golden Acres Boarding Home in Hancock following a long illness. Lydia was born on February 18, 1922 in Stamford, CT. the daughter of Edward H. and Nellie M. (Pillsbury) Smith.
Her father was the principal of Stamford High School, where she graduated in 1938. After graduation, she worked at Pitney-Bowes and Electric Indicator. She attended the University of Vermont, and received her first teaching assignment in Darien, CT. She received a Master’s Degree and Professional Certificate from Columbia University in New York. When wanderlust hit in 1954, she joined the Civil Service, and taught overseas in schools for military dependents. She served in Frankfurt, Berlin and Augsburg, Germany; Bar le Duc, and Fontainbleau France; Lakenheath, England; Aviano, Italy; Yokohama, Japan; with her final station being Zeist, Holland. She returned to the states each Christmas to spend time with her brother and his family in Connecticut, and they all spent summers together at the family home in Sullivan. In 1989, Lydia retired to Sullivan, where she cultivated her appreciation of gardening and especially day lilies.
Lydia is survived by her niece, Louisa, and sister-in-law, Claire; both of Connecticut.
Calling hours will be held 3:00-5:00 pm, Friday, November 11, 2011 Jordan-Fernald, 113 Franklin St. Ellsworth. A private burial service will take place the following day at Simpson Cemetery in Sullivan. Lydia’s family would like to acknowledge the compassionate, loving care she received in her final years at Golden Acres.
