ELLSWORTH -- Liliane Kell, 82, died peacefully on September 26, 2016, at her home in Ellsworth, with loving family members at her side. She was born June 14, 1934, in the Principality of Monaco, the daughter of Jean Antoine Aperlo and Inès Biagini.

Her childhood was spent in northern Italy during World War II, and afterward in the fishing village of Villefranche-sur-mer on the French Riviera. At age 20 she immigrated to the United States on board the Andrea Doria, joining her mother and stepfather in Manasquan, New Jersey. Always a fine athlete, Liliane met her future husband, Doug Kell, at the local roller skate rink there. They were married three months later, and would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on October 1st of this year. Twenty years later Liliane and her family moved to Maine, living first in Brewer before relocating to Ellsworth in 1995.

Liliane's flawless English was spoken with a lovely lilt, and her full name itself is like a melody: Liliane Jacqueline Angèle Olga Aperlo Kell. Her life was filled with many friends and multiple interests and pursuits, but most important to her was her family. She was above all a loving and devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She created a beautiful home and garden for them, was a wonderful cook, and delighted in sewing and knitting clothing for her children and grandchildren. She was active in the local French group, an avid member of a tennis group with whom she continued to play weekly as recently as five months ago, and served for several years as a member of the board of trustees of The Grand. She maintained close ties with her family in France, and with her husband traveled extensively in Europe and the Far East.

Liliane was an accomplished artist in many styles and media: calligraphy, book making, decorative paper making, painting, and sewing. She studied with some of the best calligraphers in the country, and was known for her flower painting and color palette, with her remarkable sense of color and design showing the influence of her early life in southern France. In her typically generous fashion, she always shared her skills with others, teaching a monthly art class in her studio for over 20 years. Her own art was often on exhibit locally, and she leaves behind a body of work that her family and friends will treasure.

Liliane showed grace in her dealings with people and was a devoted friend to many who will miss her greatly. Most of all she will be missed by her family, especially her grandchildren, with whom she shared many hours and special activities.

Family members include her husband Doug; children Dugald Kell, Jr. and his wife Jeannie of Surry, Philip Kell of Ellsworth, Eric Kell and his wife Deborah of Newburyport, MA, and Carol-Lee Elkington and her husband Christian of Kennebunkport; and eight grandchildren, Braden, Ethan, and Emma Kell of Surry, Ryan and Rebecca Kell of Newburyport, MA, and Christian, Tyler, and Elizabeth Elkington of Kennebunkport. Liliane was predeceased by her daughter Michèle. In addition, Liliane is survived by Janet Kiely, whom she thought of as a daughter, and her husband, David, of Brick, NJ, as well as their children, Michele and Melissa, and their families.
