Obituary for Leon "Hub" Hubbard

BAR HARBOR
Leon William Hubbard, “Hub,” 74, died March 18, 2014, at Florida Hospital, Zephyrhills, Fla. He was born Oct. 18, 1939, in San Diego, Calif., the son of Clair Leon Pinney and Helen Mary (Rief) Pinney.

After his father was killed in California, his mother, Helen, remarried Frederick Hubbard from Bar Harbor. He was raised in Bar Harbor by Helen and Frederick Hubbard, until he lost his mother in 1950 and continued to be raised by Frederick. In 1958, “Hub” married the love of his life, Grace Pinkham.
He was a member of the Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, he attended St. Edward’s Catholic School, Sacred Heart Catholic School, Mount St. Charles, and graduated from Bar Harbor High School in 1958. He started his working career with The Great A & P Tea Co. He moved to a larger store in Brewer, where he was assistant manager. In 1975, he returned to Bar Harbor to open The H&H Supermarket, with Hank Marino. The store allowed him to share his Maine charm with many island residents and visitors to Mount Desert Island. After he closed the H&H, he worked at Don’s Shop and Save until 1998. In 2000, he and Grace divided their time between Betmar Park, Zephyrhills, Fla., and their home in Bar Harbor. Hub felt he “had the best of both worlds” when he retired. He helped Loren at Little Village Gifts/Hub’s Hobbies for 22 years. He will be missed by the wonderful folks he befriended over the years. His love of sports shaped his many bonds (and rivalries...) with the residents of MDI. Athletic awards from Bar Harbor High School, co-captain of football team and basketball teams in 1958. He played all sports in his days at Bar Harbor High School. He was a volunteer fireman, involved in youth sports in Bar Harbor, coaching Little League for many years. He was president and a board member of the YMCA, a member of the MDI Rotary Club and helped organize the first pancake breakfast on July 4. Hub was involved with the founding of the MDI High School Sports Booster Club and the Lighting Committee. He was inducted into the MDI High School Hall of Fame in 2013.
“Hub” is survived by his wife, Grace Pinkham Hubbard; daughters, Deborah Suter, Sherri Coopersmith, husband, Jack, Leanne Pacheco, husband, Eric; sons, Leon Hubbard Jr., wife, Sonja, Loren Hubbard, wife, Shawn Porter; grandchildren, Justin Gray, SarahAnn Coopersmith, Alec and Carissa Pacheco, Brennan and Ella Hubbard, Brody and Cole Hubbard; great-grandchildren, Kaya and Gavin Gray; step-granddaughter Darcy Throckmorton, husband, Kevin, and sons, Noah and Luke; sisters and brothers-in-law, Mary and Leman Smith and Jayne and Tom Batchelor; many nieces and nephews; and several cousins in California.
A Memorial Mass will be held 10 am, Wednesday, May 28, 2014 at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, 21 Ledgelawn Ave., Bar Harbor. Interment will be at Holy Redeemer Cemetery, Bar Harbor. In lieu of flowers a donation may be made in Hub’s memory to The Leon Hubbard MDI Youth Sports Fund, Attention: Heidi Dorr, c/o The First, 102 Main St., Bar Harbor, ME 04609.
