Condolence From: Judy Mangion, MD
Condolence: So sorry to hear about Jan's passing. The world has truly lost a free spirit. I am blessed to have connected with her years ago, and to have had the opportunity to conduct research with her on some of the cardiac manifestation's of Alstrom Syndrome. Was hoping to re-connect, and am so sad to learn she is now in heaven.

Condolence: Jan’s death is such a shock. She was always full of life. I remember picking her up Mondays after school to go with those from Amherst High School to help tutor kids at St. Andrews United Methodist Church in Buffalo,NY. Then there was the week in the inner city of Philadelphia on a church mission trip. Her parents were against her going, but she was determined! She got blisters on her hands from using crutches to go up the three flights of stairs to where the group slept. Later, her dad Tom said it strengthened her.

We visited Jan and Rob in ME when our kids were young. She was so excited about her research. I am grateful that we still lived in Williamsville, NY when she was honored by the Williamsville School District by being placed on the Wall of Fame.

She traveled the world to help children with Alstrom Syndrome. Nothing stopped her!

Condolence: Rob, I was just catching up on the BDN and saw Jan's obit. I was shocked and sad. Then a little smile came on my lips because I remembered some very fun nights at The Deckhouse with some wonderful people. I will cherish those memories even more now. Jan was always so friendly and caring to us. You folks adopted Judy and I into your group even though we could not sing or dance! Thank you for some wonderful memories ! Love and hugs to help get you through. Terri Brown. Rn EMMC

Condolence: I never actually met Jan, but communicated with her for several years whilst helping to gather blood samples from my family (in the UK) to help in the ASI studies. She was a very dedicated and caring researcher, and it was always a pleasure to receive an e-mail from her and "chat" online about her work. Her work has helped so many people, and I was shocked to hear of her passing. My condolences to her family, she will obviously be hugely missed.

Condolence: Dear Rob and Erin,

Micah and I are so sorry to hear of Jan’s passing. We were so lucky to have known her and been recipients of her overwhelming kindness and generosity. It takes a special kind of patience and grace to adopt rambunctious young artists summer after summer after summer. Jan was a very special woman, and all of the Deck House alumni are better for knowing her.

With much love and deepest condolences,
Danielle Conroy and Micah Olson

Condolence: Jan, I have known you for 28 years and adored you from the first day. I am not prepared to spend the rest of my life missing you, but I guess that's what has to happen. I hope our selves or our spirits or whatever else we might call this vital spark within us continues after death, because if so, I will dearly love hugging you enormously again one day. For others who might read this, here's one of my absolute favorite "Jan Moments":

Scene: aboard the Marshall vessel 'Cabaret'
Date: summer 2005
Attendees: Jan, Robin, Me, other wonderful people as always

Me: "Guess what! I just bought a new car!"
Jan: "Yay! What is it?"
Me: "It's just about the last thing you'd ever expect me to drive."
Jan, not missing a beat: "The Batmobile!!"
Me, shaking in helpless laughter: "... ... ..."
Me, finally: "No, it's a Mini Cooper!"

Bless you, dear friend. Your legacy of joy and laughter will live on in all of us.
