Obituary for Ida Blanchard

Seal Harbor
Ida Blanchard, 88, passed away peacefully with family by her side on Saturday, July 4, 2015 after a short stay at Birch Bay in Bar Harbor. Ida M. Blanchard was born on October 20, 1926 in Seal Harbor. She was the daughter of Phyllis and William Walton. She took Samuel A. Blanchard’s hand in marriage on February 2, 1947. He preceded her in death on December 23, 2009. They were happily married for 62 years.
Ida spent most of her life in Seal Harbor. She was a fixture in the town and began working at the Seaside Inn at a young age. Later on she helped run several businesses with her family. She managed deep sea fishing, sightseeing and whale watching tours starting with the vessel Ida Mae, then the Seal and lastly the Sea Runner. Ida was most known around the community for her seemingly philanthropic snack shop where she traded stories with people at the dock and fed and watched the neighborhood kids. Ida volunteered in many places including hospitals in Bar Harbor, ME and Marathon, FL and at the local nursing homes in which her mother stayed. Her hobbies included knitting, quilting and painting, and she was quite a talented artist with a deep love for the sea.
She is survived by her children and spouses, Philip Blanchard, Seal Harbor, Samuel W. and Martha Blanchard of Seal Harbor; grandchildren, Zach and Vanessa Blanchard, Carmel, Joshua and Amy Blanchard, Bangor; great grandchildren, Vincent and Samuel E. Blanchard. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by five brothers and one sister.
The family would like to give a special thanks to Sharon and Ernie Gilley, Juanita Young, Jeanne Wescott and all of those who helped her throughout her battle with cancer.
Funeral services, prayer and burial for Ida M. Blanchard, 88, of Seal Harbor will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday July 11, 2015 at the Seal Harbor Cemetery. The family will hold a gathering directly after at Ida’s longtime residence at 11 Upper Dunbar Rd., Seal Harbor.
