Hampton, VA/Lamoine
Harry Cecil Hamor, 91, went to be with our Lord on July 20, 2015. Born in Lamoine, Maine, he was the son of the late Arthur George and Winnefred Francis (McIntyre) Hamor.
He had been a resident of Hampton, Virginia since 1971. During his youth, Harry industriously worked jobs to earn money while attending school. At the age of 17, Harry voluntarily enlisted in the U.S. Army where he proudly served in the European Theater in World War II. Following the war, Harry returned home, finished his high school education and married Ms. Marguerite Persis Walker. In 1947, Harry served on the committee that established the Lamoine Volunteer Fire Department and served as Treasurer until enlisting in the Air Force in 1952. With his bride, Harry traveled to Okinawa, Hawaii, Alaska, Virginia, New York and Florida. While stationed at Langley Air Force Base, they fell in love with Hampton Roads and actively participated in Hampton Baptist Church. When Harry retired from the Air Force in 1970, they returned to Hampton, Virginia. Soon after, Harry began his career with the U.S. Postal Service, delivering mail, driving the tractor trailers - of which he was still very proud and lastly, as a driving instructor. After serving 20 years, Harry, not one to sit idly by, began working for Walmart in Hampton. With childlike enthusiasm, Harry maneuvered the fork lift and toted bags of soil and fertilizer, while his bride brightened the entry way to welcome customers. Harry faithfully worked in Lawn and Garden until his bride became ill and needed him by her side.
Harry Hamor is survived by his son, Paul Hamor and his wife, Michelle Hamor; his sister, Marion McFarland and her husband, Walt; two sisters-in-law, Juanita Wilbur and her husband, Irving and Bea Jordan; three nieces, Jean Donovan and her husband, Roland, Julie Curtis and her husband, Chris and Terri Jordan; four nephews, Gary McFarland and his love, Deborah, John Wilbur and his wife, Anne, Sheldon Jordan and his wife, Velma, and Joey Wilbur and his wife, Methel; two grandchildren; Jordan Banton and Sophia Hamor and a host of extended family and friends. Harry was predeceased by his wife of 58 years, Marguerite Hamor and sister, Mildred Hamor.
Of the many things that will be missed, it will be his quick witty comebacks that made you laugh out loud and his warm hug and welcoming handshake at the entrance to West Hampton Baptist Church that will be dearly missed.
The family would like to thank the staff of Dr. Marshall’s office, Visiting Angels Home Care and Riverside Hospice and the Cardiac Rehabilitation staff at Maine Coast Memorial Hospital for their loving care of Harry.
Calling hours will be held 4:00-6:00 pm, Sunday, July 26, 2015 at Jordan-Fernald, 113 Franklin St. Ellsworth. A funeral service will be 2:00 pm, Monday, July 27th at the Lamoine Baptist Church. Interment at Forest Hill Cemetery, Lamoine. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Lamoine Volunteer Fire Department, 606 Douglas Highway, Lamoine 04605.
