Obituary for Harriet L. Burns

Swans Island
Harriet Lorrain Burns, 89, died peacefully, October 4, 2014 in Bangor. She was born, December 7, 1924 in Portland, the daughter of Harry and Isabel (Thibideau) West. Harriet’s mom died at the age of 7 and her Christian grandmother adopted her.
She met Norman Burns while he was working as lead man for the Portland Ship Yard during WWII; they were married and settled on Swan's Island. Harriet was known as an amazing cook. Many friends from near and far were invited to Harriet and Norman’s table to enjoy her lobster stew, fried scallops, biscuits, cinnamon rolls and oh the cream puffs. Harriet was involved in helping in the community, the school lunch program, coordinating wedding receptions and baby showers on the island; she cared for the elderly and took in those without a home. In her last years she became quite the storyteller, and would spontaneously sing a song of her own. Norman and Harriet loved going to dances, the band was always Danny Harper. She was very thoughtful, always giving to everybody instead of taking.
Harriet is survived by her son, Norman K. Burns of Swans Island; two daughters, Pat Lemoine and husband, Gilbert and Christy Conrad and husband, Bruce; one brother, Harry West; grandchildren, Averill West and husband James and son, James, Shaun Lemoine and sons, Logan and Dillon, Lucas Lemoine and daughter, Isabella Grace, Luke Conrad, Katie Vinson, Michael Conrad, Alyssa Conrad and daughter, Reagan, Kristen Conrad, Zoe Conrad and Zach Conrad. Her husband, Norman Burns and her daughter, Pamela Burns, predeceased her.
Funeral services will be held, 11:00AM, Saturday, October 11, 2014 at Swans Island Baptist Church. Interment will be at Rose Hill Cemetery, Swans Island.
