George “Stetson” White, 90, died December 27, 2014 at Seaport Village Healthcare in Ellsworth. He was born August 28, 1924 in Bangor, the son of William L. and Hester (Crimmins) White and step-father, Harvard Billings.
George grew up in Franklin and attended Franklin High School. He joined the Army and was wounded during WWII. After his honorable discharge, he received his BA from the University of Maine in Orono in 1949 and became a high school math teacher for many years.
He married is first wife, Marilyn and settled in Ilion, NY. While teaching he was a member of the Civil Air Patrol, stationed in Greenland for 18 months, where he helped secure the US from nuclear attacks. George’s passion was flying and his greatest love was flying solo. He also enjoyed computers, keeping up on the latest news and practical jokes. George had an uncanny ability for telling jokes.
George is survived by his second wife, Martha (Gordon) White and they have resided in Ilion, NY and Gouldsboro, ME. He is also survived by his daughter, Janet La Celle of Herkimer, NY; six grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his first wife, Marilyn; their son, George Jr.; daughter, Pamela Vogel;and sister, Jean Dodge.
Friends are invited to call 10-11:00AM, Friday, January 2, 2015 at Jordan-Fernald, 113 Franklin St., Ellsworth, where a memorial service will follow at 11:00AM. A reception will be held immediately following the service.
