Obituary for Ferne Leonard

Southwest Harbor
Ferne (Rumill) Leonard, 97, died April 5, 2015 in Bar Harbor. She was born, July 10, 1917 in Seal Cove, the daughter of Arthur Heslyn and Lelia Alice (Reed) Rumill.
She attended Pemetic High School, class of 1935 and Bangor School of Commerce and took numerous banking courses. In 1935 Ferne married the love of her life and best friend, John J. Leonard Sr. and they celebrated 73 years of marriage in Manset and Southwest Harbor. She was a wonderful wife and mother. Ferne worked as a bookkeeper for H.G. Reed. She also was a teller at Bar Harbor Bank & Trust Company, as well as manager of the Southwest Harbor branch, loan officer and assistant vice president. She was a member of the Maine and New England Needlework Association, American Legion, Southwest Harbor/Tremont Nursing Association and Pemetic Alumni Association. Ferne enjoyed family, sewing, rug hooking, cross stitch and needlepoint and spending time in her beautiful dahlia and peony flower gardens. She loved to travel to Florida with her husband and play shuffle board with friends.
She is survived by two sons, Howard E. Leonard of Bar Harbor and John Jr. and wife Sharon Leonard of Warner Robins, Ga.; one daughter, Janice and husband David Reed of St. Augustine, FL; grandchildren, Karl Reed and wife Sharon of Naples, FL., Shawn Reed and wife Mary of Ft. Wainwright, AK, Kevin Reed and wife Allison of Presque Isle, Vicki Leonard Alley of Ellsworth, Jeffrey Leonard and wife Laura of Greenwich, CT., Jessica Leonard Casey and husband, Jim of Athens, GA. and Lynn Leonard Tinkham and husband Blair of Orrington; thirteen great-grandchildren, Chloe' and Simon Casey, Campton, Parker, Tilly, Boden and Sidonie Tinkham, Christia and Alyssa Alley, Jeffrey Lawford, Hunter and Abigail and Olivia Reed; one great-great grandchild. Ferne was predeceased by her beloved husband, John; infant daughter, Barbara; dear sisters, Lurlene Rumill Murphy, Theolyn Rumill Erskine, Ava Rumill Gott and Elaine R. Smith; and grandsons, Mark David Reed and Mark Edmund Reed.
Services will be announced in the spring.
