Douglas married Sylvia Jean Murphy of Bass Harbor, in July of 1951. He raised his family in Seal Cove where he also raised vegetable gardens, especially potatoes. He worked as a trained diesel mechanic, part-time lobster fisherman, shipping room foreman at Stinson Canning Company in Southwest Harbor and as a carpenter. It was as a carpenter that he occupied his “retirement” years helping friends and family with various building projects, large and small.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Jeannie; his son, Bill Freeman and wife Stephanie of Trenton; his daughter, Terry Dow and husband Gilbert of Bass Harbor; grandchildren, Danny Schlaefer and wife, Sarah Whitten of Old Town, Amy Schlaefer and fiancé Sandy Rich of Bass Harbor; great granddaughter, Caitlin Ward; brothers, Merrill Seavey Jr. and wife Elaine and George Seavey and wife Margaret; special friends, John Goodwin Jr., Alan Gordius and Chad Lee. Douglas was predeceased by his parents; younger brother, Roger Seavey and wife, Patricia.
Interment will be at Pretty Marsh Cemetery, October 20, 2012. No flowers, please. A get-to-gather for family and friends will be at Terry and Gibby Dow’s from 1-4 pm.
