Obituary for Donald E. Moore

Ellsworth/Lamoine
Donald E. Moore, 94, died on April 1, 2014, at the Maine Veterans Home in Bangor. He was born December 3, 1919 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the son of George Smith Moore of Mariaville, Maine (a family that goes back 8 generations), and Isabella Helen (Stilb) Moore of Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Don graduated from Ellsworth High School, class of 1939. Following graduation, he attended college prep school, but left to join the US Army in 1941. Don served proudly with the 43rd Infantry Division throughout the South Pacific. He served proudly anywhere they needed him, which led to his crossing the equator 4 times. He returned home in 1945 and met his bride to be, Kathleen Mary Kinnane, while fighting the Bar Harbor fire. Don and Kay were married on May 31st, 1948. They settled in Lamoine where they raised a loving family of 10. They celebrated over 50 years of marriage before Kay passed in 2002. For over 60 years, Don was a loyal member of the American Legion, Post 0207 and of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, both of Ellsworth. He also served his community for many years as a member of the Knights of Columbus. Don loved to sing and participated for many years in the church choir. Without a song or a whistle, Don’s day was not complete. Don loved Maine and chose the Army so he could feel the earth beneath his feet. He loved to hunt and fish and in his later years became an avid golfer who cared more about the beauty of the course than his double-digit handicap. Don also had an undying love for reading and sharing books with a Buddy, and for the Boston Red Sox, a team he followed from the 1920’s.
Don was predeceased by his wife, Kathleen and his two sisters, Harriet and Vivian and his beloved grandson, Brandon Pearson. He is survived by his daughters, Kathleen Pearson and her husband, Larry, Anne Moore, and Mary Henry and her husband David; sons Kevin Moore and his wife Lysaida, Donald Moore and his wife Tami, Frank Moore and his wife Cornelia, John B. Don is also survived by many kind and loving friends and neighbors of Lamoine, Ellsworth, and Bangor.
Don is remembered with many expressions of love including: “He has always called me his ‘girl with the Jack-O-Lantern eyes.’ He always makes me feel he is as delighted to hear from me as I am to hear his happy laugh, and to picture that twinkle in his eye.” “Your Great Uncle Don and Great Aunt Kay are the best example of marriage and love I know.” “I know my life is richer for having just being his Nephew.” “I have to look at the brighter side and console myself by remembering the life that this beautiful man lived and the direction that he lead us. I am so humbled to have been a part of his life and the life of all of you. ‘My cup runneth over.’” “He was kindness itself and much loved.” “Dad was a very strong man in so many ways - he survived and returned from a war, he raised 10 kids and survived that too, he survived a humble existence but acted like he had won the lottery the whole time.” “He will leave a large void in all our lives as we say Good-bye to this wonderful man.” “We are going to miss him greatly along with his singing voice and signature mustache.” Thank you Dad, Grampy, Uncle Don, and Don for all you gave us. We love you to eternity and beyond.
