Brooksville
Darrell Frank (Papa) Fowler , 67, died October 25,2014 at EMMC, Bangor after a sudden illness, with his extended loving family by his side. He was born on May 29, 1947 in Castine, the son of Frank and Betty (Babson) Fowler.
He experienced an idyllic childhood and lived his entire life in his hometown, except for a stint in the U.S Air Force from 1965-1969 where he was stationed in Texas and Taiwan. He was very proud of his military service and instilled a sense of American pride in his children and grandchildren. Darrell graduated from George Stevens Academy in 1965 and after his military service worked for a short time as an underground miner, surviving a cave-in. He then was employed by A T & T for 20 years and subsequently started his own business, Coastal Telephone & Wire, which he ran successfully for 24 more years until his retirement this past April. He was often said to be the most experienced telephone man in the State of Maine. There wasn't a telephone problem that he couldn't figure out and his friendly nature and people skills made him a favorite wherever he went. Darrell believed in giving back to the town he loved. He was a member of the Brooksville Fire Department for over 30 years, serving as Fire Chief for seven of them and for the last six was a Selectman of the town, a position he truly enjoyed. The "Town House" crew were some of his favorite people, and they in turn enjoyed his easy nature, listening skills and logical thinking. He was a man of many talents. He loved working with his hands and he and his wife, Pam, were very proud of their camp on Walker Pond which they built together after cutting the trees and sawing the lumber with his sawmill. He also enjoyed boating, snowmobiling and motorcycling. He had recently purchased a motorcycle with a sidecar which he and his trusty German Shepard, Harley, would ride around town.
His greatest joy in his life was his family. He is survived by his beloved wife and best friend, Pam; his daughters, Michelle Fowler of Stonington, Maggie Fowler of Brooksville, Kristin Larrabee of Sedgwick and Kate Fowler of Providence, RI.; his stepsons and their wives, Eric and Erin Hutchins of Brooksville and Ryan and Amanda Hutchins of Westbrook. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren; Abbigail Bray, Jacob Weed, Emma Weed, Libby Weed, Sarah Desmond, Savannah Desmond, Kayla Bowden, Kyle Fowler, Thomas Montilla, Ella Hutchins and Layla Hutchins and two great-granddaughters, Aubrey Graceffa and Ellaina Robinson; his siblings, Brenda Rankin, Mike and Cathy Fowler and Tim and Brenda Fowler; his in-laws, the Ronald Libby family of Sorrento as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and his brother, Joe.
A memorial service will be held 1:00 PM, Saturday, November 1, 2014 at the Brooksville Elementary School, 1527 Coastal Road, Brooksville
