Obituary for Charles E. Gower, Sr

Bar Harbor
Charles Earl Gower, Sr., 83, died comfortably on March 16, 2015 at The Maine Veterans’ Home, Bangor. He was born July 3, 1931 in Bar Harbor to Earl P. and Mary A. (Byron) Gower.
Charlie served in the United States Army from October 1952 to September 1954 and served in Germany during that time. Charlie, a life-long resident of Bar Harbor enjoyed a life as a chef and piano player in Florida as well as Bar Harbor. His music was heard around the island in places like The Jordan Pond House. He was frequently seen walking the carriage paths and swimming at Echo Lake. He assisted many people through his avid commitment to AA and hosting AA meetings. He always enjoyed being with people and telling stories of the Island’s history. His smile warmed many hearts.
Charlie is survived by the mother of his children, Dolores Gower, of Bar Harbor; brother, John Gower and wife Marie of Tremont and Naples, FL; 2 sons, Charles E. Gower Jr. and partner, Sue Stanley and her daughters Olivia and Emma, of Bar Harbor and Joseph Gower of Bangor; 2 daughters, Donna VanMetre and husband Craig, of Chicago, IL, Laura Jauch and husband, Andy of San Diego, CA.; 3 grandchildren, Ben and wife, Ashley, Nathan and Eden. He was predeceased by 2 sisters, Kathleen ‘Kay’ Peverini and Eileen McMorrow and a brother, Father James Gower.
A graveside memorial will be held 10:00 am, Sat., May 23, 2015 at Holy Redeemer Cemetery, Kebo Street, Bar Harbor.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be given in Charlie’s memory to your local AA chapter or The Maine Veterans Home, 44 Hogan Rd, Bangor, ME 04401 or your local Veteran’s home.
