Obituary for Cecily S. Flowers

Cecily Shryock Flowers of Bar Harbor, Maine, died July 27, 2015 at Birch Bay Village. Born August 17, 1927 in Gary, Indiana, Cecily is the daughter of Virgil P. and Gladys Augusta Sage Shryock of Albany, KY; sister to deceased WWII bombardier William Joseph of Hobart, IN, and former wife of deceased Billy G. Flowers of Corbin, KY. She attended Hobart (IN) High School and graduated from Louisville General Nursing School as part of the US Army Nurses Corps in 1948. Sent to Albany, KY to fulfill her corps responsibilities, she met and married Billy G. Flowers. She studied anesthesia at Miners Memorial Hospital, Harlan, KY, graduating in 1961. From 1961 to 1990, she worked as Chief Nurse Anesthetist at Corbin Hospital/Baptist Regional Medical Center, Corbin, KY.
She is survived by her daughters, Dr. Patricia Flowers of Carmel, IN; Dr. Susan Carpenter of Louisville, KY; and Rachael Sharp, CRNA of Bar Harbor, ME. Her grandchildren: Michael A. Hicks of Chicago, IL, Steven P. Hicks of Fishers, IN, Elizabeth C. Hughes, APRN of Louisville, KY, Dr. Jacqueline Carpenter of Newport, KY, Catherine and Mary Ellen Sharp of Bar Harbor, ME, as well as 6 great grandchildren.
Cecily requested no funeral services be held, but a celebration of her life will be held in Albany, KY at burial. The family requests that in lieu of flowers and gifts, please consider donating to the IU Simon Cancer Center, ℅ IU Foundation, Ovarian Cancer Research, P.O. Box 7072, Indianapolis, IN 46207.
