Obituary for Avril Stuart Haynes (Stuart)

Avril Stuart Haynes (Stuart)
TRENTON – Avril Stuart Haynes passed away peacefully in the evening of Dec. 8 to join her husband, Charles. Her family was at her side throughout the afternoon and evening. Avril was born in 1924 in Dover-Foxcroft to Ross and Luella Stuart. As a child she lived there and Pittsfield prior to moving to Ellsworth in her early teens, where she met her future husband, Charles. After graduating from high school, she attended Farmington State Teachers College and graduated with a degree in home economics in 1946. Upon Charles’ return from his service overseas during World War II, he asked Avril to marry him. The two were married Aug. 24, 1947.

After a brief stay in Ellsworth, they moved to Boston, where Avril worked for many years as the director of Children’s Community Corner Daycare Center in Chelsea, Mass. Both of her children, Martha and Elizabeth, were born in Boston. Every summer the family packed up and headed north the day after school got out to spend the summer at their beloved cottage at Shady Nook in Trenton and visit with the Haynes and Stuart families in Ellsworth. Avril retired from her position as director in 1983. She and Charles moved back to Shady Nook for good in 1987, building their home overlooking Union River Bay.

Once retired, she became a very active member of the First Congregational Church, UCC of Ellsworth, serving on multiple committees. She was also a member of PEO and the Hancock County Quilters. Avril spent much of her free time gardening and quilting, but her joy was spending time with her family and friends.

The last few years of her life were happily spent at Birch Bay Village, where she made many new friends — both staff and residents alike.

Avril was predeceased by her parents, Ross and Luella Stuart, her beloved husband, Charles, and her sister Marvis Steward. She leaves behind her daughter Martha along with her son-in-law, John Cole, and their two children, Kathleen and Ian and Ian’s wife, Norma Madrid, her younger daughter Elizabeth (Libby) and her husband, Robert Mooney. In addition, she is survived by her sister Avis and numerous nieces and nephews.

Interment will be in the spring of 2017 with a memorial service being held at the First Congregational Church, UCC of Ellsworth on Saturday, June 17, 2017. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the First Congregational Church, UCC of Ellsworth, PEO or charity of their choice.

In addition the family would like to thank Birch Bay Village Assistant Living staff for the compassionate and loving way they cared for our mother/grandmother.
