Obituary for Donald A. Wood

Donald A. Wood, 84, died November 16, 2016 in Bucksport. He was born, February 21, 1932 in Bar Harbor, the son of Foster James and Nettie May (White) Wood.
Don graduated from Bar Harbor High School and then served in the U.S. Air Force. He played with the Bangor Symphony in the 1950’s and studied at the Northern Conservatory of Music in Bangor in 1960, where he earned his teaching degree. Don taught private music lessons and worked in the Maine School System as a Jr. High and High School Music Teacher and Director of the Choir, and Concert, Jazz and Marching Bands. He also worked as an Acadia National Park Bus Tour Guide.
He was Director of the Bar Harbor Town Band for over 40 years. The Bar Harbor Village Green Band Stand was dedicated with a plaque and stone in honor of his years of leadership and service to the community.
Donald enjoyed watching his grandchildren’s sports games and attending local basketball games with his wife, Helen and a small group of close friends. He also loved taking a drive each night with Helen searching for deer on the Island.
Don is survived by two sons: James D. Wood and wife Jean of Exeter, NH., and Michael A. Wood and wife Iris of Bucksport, Maine, daughter: Donna W. Wright and husband Jeff, of Lexington, South Carolina; thirteen grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren, son-in-law, Paul Cavanaugh of Calais, Maine. Donald was predeceased by his beloved wife, Helen, daughter, Diane Cavanaugh, and seven brothers and sisters.
A memorial service will be held, 2:00PM, Saturday, November 19, 2016 at the First Baptist Church, 46 Ledgelawn Avenue, Bar Harbor with Pastor Scott Records officiating. There will be a gathering at the church, immediately following the service. Private interment will be at Ledgelawn Cemetery.
