Life Story for Mary Elizabeth "Mimi" Massucco

Mary Elizabeth "Mimi" Massucco
Mt. Desert-- Mary Elizabeth “Mimi” Massucco, 75, died on September 6, 2016. A native of New Milford, Connecticut, she made Mt. Desert Island her home in 1973. Mimi was born May 22, 1941 in CT. the daughter of C. George and Helen (Green) LaTaif and is the widow of Dr. Robert L. Massucco.

Mimi was best known for her generous heart, selfless acts and nurturing attitude throughout the community. While professionally trained as an interior designer from Rhode Island School of Art and Design, she dedicated her life making the best home for her two children and late husband. As the children grew, she worked for several years for the Bar Harbor Times. After leaving the Bar Harbor Times, she began working as a Travel Agent, planning vacations for many of the Island’s residents. She found tremendous joy in helping others with their travel plans. She was a problem-solver.

Most notably, Mimi’s generosity was renowned throughout the community. When her sons’ Cub Scout troops needed a leader, Mimi volunteered to be the pack’s Den Mother. When the boys' little league team needed a coach, again, Mimi stepped in. Mimi was a mother to all children in the community, opening her doors and welcoming to all. She ensured that everybody was fed, clothed, and had a bed to sleep in, whether they were her children or not. She opened her home to foreign exchange students and children who needed a stable home environment in which to grow. The Massucco home was a place where any child was welcome and the refrigerator was always full.

No sporting event was ever complete without Mimi voicing her support. She was her children’s biggest cheerleader.

A lover of the outdoors who also had her private pilot’s license, Mimi enjoyed camping, hiking, skiing, snowshoeing and many other outdoor activities.

Mimi’s greatest love was making others happy. She welcomed guests and friends to her Long Pond cottage during the summers and treated them to watersports, food, and warm company. After 5 minutes of meeting her, you were no longer a stranger. In the winter, during Christmas, she made coffee cake “wreaths” which she delivered to all of her neighbors.

Her infectious smile and warm laugh will always be remembered and deeply missed, and her tragic loss will be felt by the entire community for years to come.

Mimi is survived by son G.Andrew Esq.and his children, Jian, Josean, and Marianna; and son Dr. Robert L. Massucco Jr. and his wife Marissa and their children Liam, Bronte, and Lennox; a brother-in-law, John Powers of New Milford, CT. and his family. She was predeceased by her husband, Dr. Robert L. Massucco Sr. and her sister, The Honorable Judge Suzanne Powers.

Calling hours are from 5-7pm, Thursday, Sept. 15, 2016 at Jordan-Fernald, 1139 Main Street, Mt. Desert. Graveside Services will be held at 10am, Friday Sept. 16 at Brookside Cemetery, Mt. Desert with a reception to follow from 11-1 at the Massucco’s home.
