Obituary for Richard E. Martin

Richard E.  Martin
Southwest Harbor -- Richard E. Martin, 71, died after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born March 24, 1945 in Mason City, Iowa and grew up in Maple Plain, Minnesota. He was the son of the late George H. and Vera M. (Rockwell) Martin.

Richard attended Mound High School and enlisted as a Seaman recruit in the United States Coast Guard in March of 1963 and served for thirty years until his retirement in June of 1993 as a CWO4 Material Maintenance Officer. During his career he served as an Aviation Survival Equipment-man and participated in many helicopter search and rescue missions and was awarded the Air Medal for his exemplary actions during the rescue of a premature infant born on a Russian fishing ship 200 miles off the Coast of Cape Cod.

Richard loved to build and his one personal goal in life was to build his own home, which he did and completed five years ago. He often said that there were always two carpenters on the job, himself and the Lord.

Richard is survived by his beloved wife of 50 years, Marguerite (Margo Landers) Martin, his daughter Paige (Martin) Gould and her husband Jeff Gould of Brattleboro, VT and his daughter Amanda (Martin) Buotte and her husband Peter Buotte, Jr of Rumford, ME., He has two grandsons, Casey and Kerry Gould of Brattleboro, VT, one granddaughter, Brooke Buotte of Rumford, ME, all of whom he loved very much and many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and great great nieces and nephews. Richard has one remaining sister, Grace Branstad of Thompson, IA. He was predeceased by his brothers, Earl, James, Karl and a sister Jane Monfiles.

A service of remembrance will be held 2:00PM, Sunday, May 8, 2016 at the Tremont Congregational Church, Tremont with Rev. Clay Gilley leading the celebration of his life. Interment will be directly following the service at Mt. Height Cemetery in Southwest Harbor.
