Leman Lester "Smitty" Smith Jr., 88, loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather died March 25, 2016 at the MDI Hospital. He was born May 19, 1927 in Bar Harbor the son of Leman L. and Gertrude E. (Farnsworth) Smith Sr.

On April 30, 1948 Smitty married his best friend and love of his life, Mary Belle Pinkham. He drafted was drafted into the U.S. Army soon after his 18th birthday to serve in WWII where he served as a military and medical technician at Coral Gables, Florida. After his discharge returned to Bar Harbor to complete his high school education and graduate in 1948. Smitty was always a hard worker. After graduation he went to work for FB Sherman and Company. He worked fulltime as a Custodian for the Bar Harbor Post Office. Smitty took great pride in the grounds and hedges which he also maintained. During this time he was given the loving nick name as the "Mayor of Cottage Street" because he enjoyed talking to those passing by while he worked. He spent many of his off hours cleaning floors for local establishments and lawn care for local estates and friends. After 36 years at the Post Office he retired in 1990. However, he never stopped working. With his wife his side, he worked as Lawn Keeper and Gardener for “The Tides”, he worked for the Bar Harbor Chamber of Commerce and was frequently called upon to many odd jobs which he was always willing to do. Over the years he was involved in community oriented organizations which included the following: serving as a Boy Scout Master, Acting Director for the YMCA, a member of the Bar Harbor Police Reserves, a member of the former Harborlighters. He was a member of St. Saviors Episcopal Church in Bar Harbor. Smitty was a 50 year member of the Masonic Lodge #185 A.F. & A.M., and a member of the Anah Shrine where he was one of the original founders of the Anah Flag Unit. He was a member of the American Legion Drum and Bugle Corps. Smitty had a great love for his family. He enjoyed attending his children's, grand children's and great-grandchildren's sporting and music events, attending plays, any activity they may be involved in, he was there to support them. He especially loved being surrounded by all of them at big family gatherings. Smitty along with Mary loved to travel, whether it was to visit family that was living away, trips abroad or cruises.

Smitty is survived by his wife of almost 68 years, Mary; 3 daughters, Trudy Smith and husband, Phillip, Patricia Perry, and Marcia King and husband Rodney; grandchildren, Jason Smith, Lindsay Cough and husband Joe, Andrea Poirier and husband Jon Zumwalt, Alicia Laurendeau and husband Jeremy, Anthony Picard, Meaghan Perry and fiancé Justin Gauger; great grandchildren, Tory, Lexi and Andrew Smith, Orion Wilson, Gordon and Gregor Cough, Dominic Marino, Evelyn and Alec Zumwalt, Athena , Maddox, Spencer and Sienna Laurendeau. He was “Uncle Junie” to many nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Service will be held at a later date.
