Bruce Merrill Johnston, 65, died January 27, 2016 in Ellsworth after a long illness. He was born in Ellsworth, March 11, 1950 the son of Jack C. and Joyce (Merrill) Johnston.

Bruce graduated from Searles High School in Great Barrington, MA, class of 1967. He was a very active class member and excelled in all sports. He attended University of Maine in 1967-1968.

He was drafted in the U.S. Army in 1969 and served in the Vietnam War with distinction. He was honorably discharged in 1972. After the service he took a course in Restaurant Management & Bartending at Harvard. He managed and ran several restaurants. He decided to do Waiter service, thus giving him freedom to travel. He bought a large travel trailer and spent his winters working in FL. and summers working in Bar Harbor. He also worked in CO, TX and the Carolina’s. His family called him the “Nomad”. He enjoyed seeing the country and took lots of photos. Bruce also enjoyed helping his brother at the apple orchards. He enjoyed fishing with his dad and friends, Harry and Bob on Roach River. His hobbies were tying “flies” and watching all sports on T.V.

Bruce leaves behind his mother, Joyce; brothers, Brett and wife Doris and Lee; sister, Judith Duncan; uncle, Richard Merrill; four nieces; one nephew; three great-nieces; two great-nephews; and a special great-nephew, Jack; and many cousins. He was predeceased by his father Jack; nephew, Nicholas; and many loved ones.

A graveside service will be 2 pm, Sat., May 7, 2016 held at Birch Grove Cemetery, Ellsworth.
