Obituary for Winona M. Dennison

Winona Mitchell Dennison, 86, died Aug. 19, 2012, after a brief illness, in Ellsworth. She was born in Harrington July 18, 1926, the daughter of Everett A. and Helena (Shaw) Mitchell.
Winona ”Noni” graduated from Harrington High School and then attended Normal School for 3 years and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Maine at Machias. She taught in Maine schools from Jacksonville to Howland and for the last 15 years before her retirement at the C.C. Knowlton school in Ellsworth. Winona enjoyed playing clarinet in her high school and college bands. She operated a pre-school in her home while her own daughter was young and she was happily married to Wayne R. Dennison for over 66 years. In retirement Noni enjoyed gardening and genealogy. She compiled many photo albums which became pictorial family histories, dating back to before the Revolutionary War. She was a member of the First Congregational Church of Ellsworth and the Maine Teachers Association.
Winona is survived by her husband, Wayne R. Dennison; sons, John W. Dennison of Bridgton and Ellsworth, James W. Dennison of Bar Harbor and Scottsdale, AZ; daughter Jane E. Butler and husband, Walter of Bar Harbor; grandchildren, Sarah W. Dennison, of Burlington, VT., Joshua E. Dennison, of Harpswell, Emily and Christopher Butler, both of Bar Harbor; nieces, Stephanie D. Larrabee and husband, Gene, of Machias, Jean D. Schors and husband, Denis, of Whiting and Donna D. Danforth and family, of East Machias; nephew Bruce Dennison and wife, Susan; sister-in-law, Laura Dennison, of Whiting and brother–in-law, Roy Dennison, Jr. and wife, Phyllis, of Wesley. She was predeceased by a brother, Everett Mitchell, Jr.
A memorial service will be held 1:00 p.m., Thursday, August 23, 2012 at First Congregational Church of Ellsworth with Pastor Nick Davis officiating. Interment will be at Woodbine Cemetery.
