William S. Dodge, 83, died September 18, 2022, in Ellsworth. He was born in Worcester, MA, December 6, 1938, the son of Karl S. and Mildred E. (McCarthy) Dodge.
Bill grew up in North Providence, RI, and graduated with a BA in Journalism from the University of Rhode Island in 1960. He served in the US Army during the Cuban Missile Crisis. In 1966, he received two master’s degrees in English Literature and Journalism from the University of Rhode Island. He taught English at the University of Cincinnati, the University of Rhode Island, and the University of Maine.
Bill moved to Maine in 1972 and opened Dodge's Antique Furniture Restoration with his former wife Jacquelyn Conway Dodge which he operated for 10 years. In 1986, he received his master’s degree in social work from the University of Connecticut. He then worked in child protective services for many years, later moving on to adult and disabled person's protective services and psychiatric care for the elderly in Hancock and Washington counties, finally retiring after 30 years. When he lived and worked in Ellsworth, he was a member of the Ellsworth Historical Society and during the 1970's served as vice-president. He was also a member of the American Association of University of Professors and an avid tennis player and golfer.
He is survived by two daughters, Jennifer Dodge and wife Stephanie Peters of South Portland, and Molly Dodge, of Berkeley, CA; three grandsons, Leo, Larkin, and August; two granddaughters, Ciara and Nova; former wife, Jacquelyn Conway Dodge of Trenton; one sister, Elaine Green of Brookfield, MA; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Bill's stoicism, intellectual curiosity, passion for new projects, and gift for loquacity will live on through his daughters. They will be forever grateful to have learned from him respect for good literature, reverence for the ocean, an affection for animals both big and small, the importance of helping others, and the habit of dressing stylishly. His grandchildren will remember learning to swim in Mill Cove, endless hours of crab hunting on the shore, and extravagant sea glass collections.
Services will be held at Hope Cemetery, Worcester, MA.
