ELLSWORTH
William Standish Clark was born in Philadelphia, PA on March 21, 1938, the son of Wesley Clarke Clark and Frances Stiles Clark. Bill died on July 27, 2010 in the Palliative Care Suite at Maine Coast Memorial Hospital surrounded by love after a valiant battle with cancer.
Bill was a graduate of Yale College (1960) and Yale Law School (1963). He built his career in investment banking at The Citizens & Southern Bank in Atlanta, Bernstein MacCauley in New York City and at The Boston Company. He moved to Maine in 1982 to lead the Trust Department at the Union Trust Company. He co-founded Wind River Capital Management in 1993. Bill considered his work a ministry. His relationship with clients was the most important aspect of his career.
Bill was fascinated by people and political history. He sustained lifelong friendships and created supportive communities. He rejoiced in the greatest adventure of his life, flying around the world in a single engine plane with his friend and next door neighbor, Lloyd Harmon. Together they also completed two other transatlantic flights for the thrill of flying and love of travel.
Bill was a devoted board member for local non-profits. He supported the work of the Bagaduce Lending Library, Child & Family Opportunities, The Grand, Hospice of Hancock County and Faith in Action. He was the long-time President of the Trustees of Diocesan Funds of the Episcopal Church of Maine.
He leaves his beloved wife, Barbara, treasured daughter Sophia Stiles Clark and stepchildren D. James Donaldson, Marie Donaldson Charlton and Joanna Donaldson Belden, their spouses and nine precious grandchildren, his sister, Sally Clark, his loving niece, Mary Beth FitzGerald and her husband, nephew John Judd and his children Ian and Alena.
