Mount Desert
The family, friends, and Island community were shocked and saddened to learn of the sudden and accidental death of Thomas Richard Savage on October 12th, 2020. Tom, born on September 11th, 1974, was the second child of Richard M. Savage II and Abbie R. Savage.
At birth, Tom had become a sixth generational descendant, born, and raised in an area of Northeast Harbor, Maine known as Asticou Village. At the time, this area was well populated and settled by an extended family of uncles, aunts, grandparents, as well as a multitude of similar aged siblings and cousins who lived in the neighborhood.
Permanent and long lasting memories of winter ice skating on the Asticou Pond, sliding, snowmobiling, fishing in the local streams and tributaries, biking into the Northeast Harbor, boating, and serving as a deck hand while chartering and deep sea fishing in the waters of Mount Desert Island, were his norm. His educational experience began at the Mt. Desert Elementary School and was graduated from Mt. Desert Island High School. Tom was an avid downhill skier and had become a respected soccer player, competing at the varsity college level, and later coaching competitive teams here on the Island. Lifelong friends were permanently established during this formative and fun filled era.
Upon graduation from Mt. Desert Island High School, he enrolled and attended Maine Maritime Academy, eventually transferring and earning a bachelor’s degree from Husson College. Appreciation and enjoyment of the quality of life while raised and living on Mount Desert Island made a permanent impression on Tom, encouraging him to fulfill his desire and dreams of being able to establish a loving and growing family, a successful business, and commitment to the public service in the Town of Mt. Desert. Tom was a co-founder and treasurer of the Asticou Connection Gallery, a Trustee of Forest Hill Cemetery, member of Town of Mt. Desert Warrant Committee and served a term as president of the Mt. Desert Island Lions Club. He held a 100 -ton Operator’s License from the United States Coast Guard.
His competitive spirit enhanced his entrepreneur instincts, and upon his return to Mt. Desert Island, Tom soon became a Licensed Arborist, then going on to establish the renowned and respected business of Savage Forest Enterprise.
Tom and Meghan’s shared passion for soccer brought them together as coaches in 2007. They spent many afternoons after practices, leaning against their cars, talking about life, the sport, and the connection between the two. Their initial fondness of each other grew to be a great love. They were married June 24, 2011 and were blessed to have three daughters, Brooke, Helayna and Maisie.
Tom was a remarkable father, husband, brother and son, the true anchor. His girls were his focus; the driving force to create lasting infrastructure that would allow them to appreciate the same quality of life he did, without bounds. He believed that our time here on earth was to build for generations to come. He was so proud of his family and valued the time spent together, including evening boat rides thru the Sound, pressing cider in the fall and family lobster picnics.
He loved so deeply and was fiercely loyal to all those he cared for. He had an ability to give and help beyond measures, always there for his family and friends. He loved all parts of life and had the brightest sparkle in his eye. Tom was all-in on everything that he did, and wanted to bring joy to everyone, from the most extravagant outings to the smallest gesture.
In addition to his beloved wife Meghan and children Brooke, Helayna, and Maisie, Tom is survived by his father, Richard M. Savage II, his mother, Abbie R. Savage, a sister, Laura Savage-Leonard and numerous nieces, nephews, close cousins and in-laws.
An outdoor social - distanced celebration of his life and a memorial service will take place at Gatehouse Road, Northeast Harbor at 1:00 pm on Sunday, October 18, 2020. All are welcome.
Contributions in Tom’s memory may be made to the Savage Forestry Scholarship Fund, c/o BHBT, P O Box 766, Northeast Harbor 04662.
