Obituary for Shirley C. Nelson

Shirley Carlisle Nelson, 95, died peacefully November 1, 2019, at her home, with Mary and Marlene by her side. She was born September 8, 1924, in Ellsworth Falls, the daughter of Harold E. and Theresa A. (Cook) Carlisle.

Shirley graduated Valedictorian from Ellsworth High School in 1941 and attended Maine School of Commerce in Bangor (now Husson University) on full scholarship. She worked at the Liberty National Bank in Ellsworth for over 25 years, the Captain of the Bank's bowling team, Shirley's Girleys, and retiring in 1987 as the Bank's Personnel Officer. For many years she participated in The Order of the Eastern Star, Irene Chapter #97; the local Salvation Army of which she was Treasurer; Union Congregational Church in Ellsworth Falls; Ellsworth Historical Society; Ellsworth High School Alumni Association; Juniper Cemetery Association of which she was the Treasurer; and the Ellsworth Congregational Church. Shirley always enjoyed playing golf, bridge violin and piano. She loved dancing, singing, baking brownies, her Fletcher Street home, her family, ice cream, and every kind of chocolate.

She was a founding member of the Newbury Neckalodeons, a group of retirees who for over 35 years delighted folks as they played their special brand of music at small gatherings in and around Surry and for residents at local nursing homes.

Shirley is survived by her daughter Mary T. White of Surry; son John A. Beal of Lamoine; 2 brothers, Arden “Tuffy” Carlisle of Surry and Richard E. Carlisle of Ellsworth; 2 granddaughters, Stephanie T. White of Ellsworth and Katie A. Slyter of Greenwood Indiana; a great-grandson Eli Michael Slyter of Greenwood Indiana; her “2nd daughter” Marlene Walker of Holden; plus many nieces and nephews. Shirley was predeceased by her beloved husband of 15 years, Harold Nelson, in 1992; a son-in-law Stephen T. White in 2017; and a very special friend Harris McLean in 2006.

The family wishes to extend a special Thank You to Marlene and all the caregivers at Total Care Solution in Holden, a private home where Shirley lived and received wonderful care and loving kindness the last 3 years of her life.

Friends are invited to call 4-6pm, Wednesday Nov. 6, 2019, at Jordan-Fernald Funeral Home, 113 Franklin Street, Ellsworth. Private committal will be at Juniper Cemetery, Ellsworth Falls.

Shirley enjoyed seeing flowers at funerals. Mary is more practical, so those who desire may make contributions in Shirley's memory to Ellsworth High School (EHS) Alumni Association, PO Box 11, Ellsworth, or to Ellsworth Falls Union Congregational Church UCC, PO Box 635 Ellsworth.
