Obituary for Shirley McGarr (Reynolds)

Shirley R. McGarr died on April 21, 2021 at her home in Northeast Harbor. She was the daughter of Jackson L. Reynolds, Sr. of Northeast Harbor, Maine and Florence Austin of Windham, Vermont. She was born January 7, 1926 in Tampa Florida and moved to Mount Desert Island at the age of 6 and considered the island her beloved home.

Shirley worked as a night telephone operator while in high school during World War II. She graduated Gilman High School in 1945 and attended the University of Maine in Orono. She was employed at MDI Hospital, Bar Harbor Savings & Loan Association, and spent 21 years at Medical Associates (now Cooper, Gilmore). She served on the Board of MDI Nursing Service was a member of St. Mary’s By the Sea and Northeast Harbor Women’s Club. She was a member of MDI Chapter DAR and an incorporator of MDI Hospital.

Shirley is survived by two sons; Dr. Scott McGarr and his wife Charlene of Dixmont,Maine and Jay Crosby McGarr of Bangor,Maine; her grandchildren Dr. Sean McGarr, his wife Amanda and their family of Hallowell, Maine and Dr. Kerry McGarr Empey, her husband Dr. Philip Empey and their family of Mars, PA. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews whom she loved and cared for over the years. Shirley was predeceased by her parents, husband Robert Elliot McGarr, two brothers Jackson Lawrence Reynolds, Keith Austin Reynolds, sisters Beatrice Bradley, Eleanor Jorden, and her lifelong friend Valerie Chase.

Special thanks to The Cahoon Care Associates and all the ladies who spent time caring and supporting her.

Graveside Services will be held 10:30 am, Saturday, Sept. 25, 2021 at Forest Hill Cemetery, Northeast Harbor, ME.
