Obituary for Rosemary T. Sargent

Ellsworth

Rosemary T. Sargent, 96, born June 15, 1924 started her life’s journey at an orphanage in Pennsylvania and ended it November 25, 2020 at her home in Ellsworth peacefully with family by her side.

Rosemary graduated from J.W. Hallhan Catholic Girls School. She served 8 years in the U. S. Navy where she met her husband Edward “Bill” Sargent and had 70 years of adventure with him.
During her Navy career from 1944-1952 she worked at the Pentagon as a secretary for a scientist that was working on special weapons for atomic bomb testing in the Bikini Island’s. While stationed in London as a secretary for the Captain in charge of the 6th Fleet, she and Bill were married in 1951, and in 1952, returned to Ellsworth where they raised their family.

Because of her strong Catholic faith she spent her life involved at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Ellsworth where for 10 years she taught Sunday School preparing children to receive First Communion, for 7 years she and Bill spent 6 months volunteering at a Franciscan mission in Guaymas, Mexico and one winter at a Navajo Reservation in New Mexico. She also volunteered at Collier’s Nursing home for 35 years.

She enjoyed sailing the Maine Coast on their boat the Double Eagle. She loved spending time with her many friends and family.

Rosemary is survived by her husband, Edward “Bill” R. Sargent, of Ellsworth; her daughters, Michelle Sargent of Tequesta, FL, Nora Garland and husband, Bob of Fletcher’s Landing and Maryellen Lozano and Augie of Bar Harbor; two sons, Gregory Sargent and Robert Sargent of both of Fletcher’s Landing; 5 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. She was predeceased by her daughter Rebecca Sargent and her brother Paul Porter. The family would like to thank Kindred hospice for all their care.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held 11am Wednesday, December 9, 2020 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 231 Main Street, Ellsworth with Father Emile Dube as Celebrant.
